I'm finally getting my '72 914 back from the shop tomorrow.....got a side shift tranny done and injection work. the exhaust is shot....what would be a good replacement? i wouldn't mind something a little loud since its jsut going to be an autocrosser. I like the dual outlet design of a manta i saw and also like the performance stuff from Bursch. what are your experiences. also, is it very hard to replace this system yourself? thanks!

Might want to upgrade your exchangers to stainless.
Low and behold a nice set is for sale. Check it out here: SOLD!
BTW, your car doesn't need to be a 2L. They will work on any motor. You just have to buy a 2L muffler and hanger.

They will last longer. Not rust out.
I'll let Brad take over... He can list more benefits. He is SSI

The Bursch setup with SSI's is the hot ticket unless you want to pop for a NO heat header system. They run about 450$ complete with a muffler from a guy in Nevada.
This setup runs me about 580$ after ceramic coating.

This system uses stub tubes.. which makes it easier to install.

The SSI's are lighter by approx. 8lbs which is important to some.
Brad Roberts

Lighter than the stock 2.0 heat exchangers, but will yield faster warm up times and outlast the car as far as corrosion goes.
Ask your mechanic abou SSI's for 914's. He wont disagree.

Brad,
Is that the triad setup or the euro race? I think that is the seup I have, but can't remember for sure... also, I need to get mine coated, do you use jet hot or someone else?

Tony,
The header is from European Racing Headers...not European Racing. BIG difference. One company pushes Type 4 parts and the other sells headers.
I use a guy in Arlington Texas. Jet hot spends NO time properly prepping the pieces. My guy blasts them..acid washes and uses a vibratory polisher to polish the pieces. He also uses much much better coatings than Jet Hot uses. My guy does parts for airplanes which requires a certification.
His name is Mike Tomlin and he runs Performance coatings.

Brad, what type of muffler can/do you run with those headers? Where can one find them?
Brad Roberts
Apr 30 2003, 05:06 PM
The guy who sells us the headers sells a complete bolt on kit with his header. The pipe even exits out the stock location. He uses a typical V8 truck turbo muffler. I think the muffler is 125$ of the price and bolts directly to the header flange.
I'll see if I have a pic.

Brad,
do you think mike thomlin would be interested in picking up new clients..
I haven't yet bought headers...(I'm waiting for the SSI-914/6 to come out).. but I definitely want to coat them when I do get them.

Brad,
Do you have a picture of that system installed on a car? Also, can you get the SS stub tubes seperately?

I was flicking past TNN last Sunday and they were installing a custom exhaust. It had a funny 'y' wishbone deal, so i had to watch.
They were installing a SS gate, it was solinoid driven, with a flick of a switch bamm total open exhaust pipe. Flip it again, back on the muffler.
Kinda cool!

Brad,
Since i am in Texas, I would much rather use your man to get mine coated...to you have a phone number for him...I will probably get this done within the next month...
thanks for the tip,
Tony
edit: Sweet...I just checked my header and it is the same as above and I got the stinger attachment along with the turbo muffler you describe...and all for 300
...gotta love buying stuff used.

Hey Brad,
Any clearance issues with this setup? Will it accomodate the tuna can sump? Looks nice; since I'm in Phoenix, needing heat isn't an issue, so I'm looking to ditch my nasty looking exchangers for something like this. Do you have a pic of it installed, with or without the street muffler?
Brad Roberts

No clearance issues with this setup. All of our cars run the tuna can or the deep sump.
I consider this the middle of the road header. Foleys header being on top and the KH header on bottom. They are priced this way also. I found it humorous that Grassroots didnt test this header back last year on their 2.0

Hmmm...that's sure not what the JetHot literature says. In fact they specifically talk about the degreasing and stripping process and show pics. They also now do two different coatings with varying heat-resistance properties.

Ive had good results with Jet Hot, I even got a borescope and checked the insides of the headers, they do in fact coat the inside somehow. The coating on my 911 headers is going on 4 yrs old now and looks like new.
I think Im going to try swaintech for my 914/6 headers.

Has anybody ever done a true dual exhaust for a flat-4 engine? (two headers coming off of #1 and #3, and two headers coming off #2 and #4, each meeting, going through an independent muffler and out an independent tailpipe) - it seems to me that there'd be less competition for the exhaust pulses coming out to the join, and it would be like two independent two-cylinder engines, and, in fact, sort of the same principle as a dual carb setup. . .
Or does this not make sense?

Tim (GRM Editor) was unaware of that product at the time, and probably still is. I didn't know much about it then either. The testing was done in July, 2000

ChrisC..
Jet Hot may have changed their ways. I stopped dealing with them when other racers where having problems.. we also found out where they where getting their coatings. Tomlin spent a whole bunch of time with chemical engineers locating the best he could find (some of it comes from NASA..lookout!!)
Foley...
I have a funny feeling.. if it doesnt come from the East coast... Mr Suddard doesnt know about it. Most the people I know where running this header before Kerry Hunter even started making headers....LOL and this was when I was in Texas and not Ca. (closer to Hunter in NM)
