You and the other half dozen of us on the thread half way down the page. I think this started with IOS 5.0 cuz I didn't have this problem prior to that.

I'm on ios5. Typing this from the iPad right now.

Get the free app called system. It allows you to clear the memory. I have found with the iPad if the background memory gets too full, safari and such will close on you all the time. It also has a slow charge function in it for the battery, that helps with battery life as well.
