Thanks for the info on my problem with the smoking.....NOT!!!!!!!

I didn't realize that you had to be in the group to get a helping hand but now realize it.......

i checked to see when you posted the original question (18 august) and noticed the time of post (0430 or something).

i have noticed that early in the morning, very often, the pages of "new posts" gets cut down to a managable size. it is possible that your question got stuck on what i call "the remainder shelf," which, incidently, is where most of my comments go. hence, it is possible it was not seen.

as for the smoking, mine does it on hard sustained corners as well. some have told me it is due to the centrifugal (centripetal?) force causing the oil in the sump to move away from where it gets drawn. the so called "tuna can" is supposed to help. it fits on the bottom of the case where the cover for the oil screen fastens. at least that is this newby's take on it.

thank you red914....I do appreciate the info....i get maybe 5 min a week with the puter due to kids and work so i'm not here much....but i do spend that time here...

Keep bumping it to the top until one of us sees it. There is NO "in crowd" some of us are just more vocal than the rest. Some of us have been here BEFORE day one.. some of us have 5 minutes on the computer also. Remember: we have 914's also... and we work on them. It doesnt leave much free time.

Copy and paste your "smoking issue" into this thread and I will take a look at it. I'm not going to search for it.

Kevin, sometimes it takes a couple of to get the right people to see the post. As B mentioned, there is a lot of owners that are spending time working on their cars and not on the computer. I have also noticed that certain times of the day, depending on your location, that the posts don't get noticed. Everyone here will help you analyze your problem and lead you to a solution.

i don't know much about T-IV's either, but i'll re-ask the questions that were asked in the thread that the people who -do- know the 4-cyl cars will need to know ...

what year? carbs? - which ones? FI - what kind ?

what kinds of modifications have you done to the car? how many miles on the engine, how does it run otherwise? do you know the compression, have you done a leakdown test?

oil gets into the combustion chamber one of two ways - through the valve guides, or past the rings. either one indicates a tired engine.

if it were black smoke, we could look to see why your engine was running too rich - there are some hoses in the FI (which we don;t know you have...) that can do that under cornering stress. but you don't have black smoke, so that's probably not it...

Another path of oil to get into the combustion chamber is thru the breather system (if you have a non-stock setup).

so, is 74bajared914's problem an uncommon one, or is it pretty standard under those circs?

good point on the breather path, which reminded me that some of these cars came with an oil-bath air cleaner that could well slosh oil out under hard cornering, especially if overfilled.

we still have no idea what 74bajared914's problem is.
he has listed some symptoms but not reported back the answers to any of the followup questions that would help us narrow it down...

breather issues are almost always solvable, unless the cause is excessive blowby from tired rings, which is yet another reason why they're bad news...
