hey sorry to post a dum question? but where is the best sites to get parts on the net
I've googled it many times and I just don't know whats best I'm getting my first 914
next week if every thing works out the car is in good shape with a locked up motor
any advice would help. I will post picks as soon as i get the car.

The guy told me that he picked the car up from a person in cal the motor was to have been rebuilt but the tranns got knocked out soon after and it just sat for about 12 year
till he sold it he said he put a new tranns in it but now the motor is locked up from setting he thinks rust maybe

It has the 1.8l engine i'm going to do a complete over hall to the engine but i'm having problems finding where to get the parts i've found gasket kits but i'm looking for new internals
sorry if i seem dum its just i don't know alot about porsches I've rebuild many sbc and 4 wheeler engines but i new where to get parts and they were all over the place

There are also a lot of specialized vendors that specialize areas such as rubber parts (914 rubber) and braking parts (PMB Performance) ect. Most can be found in the member vendor section. Check the members vendor section. We have several good member vendors. You will want to replace the plastic fuel lines in the tunnel ASAP. Several cars have been lost to fuel fires from rotted rubber hoses and brittle old plastic fuel lines.

Rebuild the brakes also. Master cylinder, rubber hoses and caliper kits.

I've got a ton of extra 914/911 parts that I'm willing to get rid of - let me know what you need?

http://www.pelicanparts.com has a lot of 914 parts, and quite a bit of technical information to boot. Disclaimer: I am affiliated with them. Glenn in the Sales department is a very knowledgeable 914 guy, and nice as well.

GPR Parts are also good guys. Markb and hwgunner here are associated with them.

Auto Atlanta is another source that lots of 914 folks love to hate. Just mentioning them is often a good way to start an argument on any 914 BBS. They do have a whole lot of parts, but there are more than a few complaints about specific transactions.

There are many more specialists (e.g. 914rubber, Eric at PMB, 914 Appearance and Performance, etc.) that are also members here.

There are three good Porsche boneyards in my area, EASY (European Auto Salvage Yard), Partsheaven, and High Performance House. The latter is a 914 specialist, and has more used 914 parts than you can imagine.

Plus the gas tank is probably rusted from the inside.
And you definitely want to replace all the rubber brake lines even if they look OK from the outside. They swell shut on the inside.
Where was it stored and does it smell like ammonia on a hot day inside?

These cars are great at attracting rats & mice. They get in if the rear heaters are not connected properly.

it was in a garage for most of it life there is no rust that I have seen on it yet and i have looked under it. I did not see any signs of mice in it no nest and wiring look ok. i didnt really smell any thing but it has not been real warm yet quit cooled here right now.
the only thing that seems odd to me is there is a little rust around the top of the carb
it looks like maybe some water got in the carb at some time

i have another question for you 1.8 and the 2.0 do they use the same block and just change the displacement or is it a different block all to gether

the heads are they different or just different valve size these seem like questions i should be able to find answer to but i cant find them.

All 1.7/1.8/2.0 use the same Engine Block. The 1.7/1.8 use the same Head they have 4 Studs. The 2.0 Head has 3 studs. They all use Different Piston & Cylinder Sets.

A killer on these Engines are the Heads. Contact HAM at HAM or through here by PMing him.

He is your Head Man and can walk you through what your head needs.

There is only one source for aftermarket heads that I know of: AMC. They are new castings, which is nice because they haven't been heat-cycled a zillion times. The hardware they use (valves, springs, etc.) is very much on the inexpensive side of the price/quality tradeoff. You can find them with better parts on them, if you look.

Others may offer them as built, with the cheap valves and such.

Len at HAM, for one, is also known for taking the basic head, doing a lot of cutting and welding, and making just about any 914/Type IV cylinder head you want.

has any one ever used any scat cranks rods and piston set I think i might go that rout I have always used them in my chevys never realized that they make parts for porsche as well

There is a reason that those of us who have been playing with 914s since the 80s hate AA, and it is not a matter of loving to hate, aa earned it, many times over just like there is a reason many of us like Pelican, GPR Parts, 914rubber & A&P Girls products.. As well as others like myself with a lot of old parts..

It's on the other side of the country, but Jamie has a motor that would be a great one to get the car running. You could then build the other motor at your leasure. Unless you have shrine planned in your garage (like quite a few of us).

To my knowledge, Len ( at ham) does not make heads. He reworks the amc castings and sells them as new heads.

thanks for all the replies you all have helped alot i have been think about getting that car for the engine and a spare tranns there is also another one i have been looking at but it dont run for $400 the car had all the back end cut off. I'm going to build this car it own garage any ways that is the plan or rent another one.

I'm going to get my 1.8 heads done and going to get scat crank rods pistons cylinder set mild cam should match up with my carbs pretty good

the next problem how week in the tranns in it will it hold up if i take care of it or will it just brake because of the power
