Full Version: Semi-OT: License plate enforcement in SoCal

Just a heads-up for those of you in SoCal or perhaps LACo in particular.

I have not had front plates on my cars in approx. 15 years, and have never been hassled. Even when receiving speeding tickets and whatnot, it never came up.

So today on the way to work, I was summoned over to the side of the road for a quick chat by a LACo (Lost Hills) Deputy. My V1 had been screaming its head off so I was not speeding at all and was somewhat puzzled at the stop. He indicated that "the boss" has asked them to start citing agressively for license plate issues. In particular he alluded to the fact that having no front plate + a smoke colored cover on the rear plate would make my car "invisible" to photo radar tickets.... cool_shades.gif Reading between the lines I am figuring that means we will see photo radar locally in the very near future...

It was just a fix-it ticket and I have until 11/1 to drill holes in the perfect front valence of my Audi or figure out some kind of zip-tie or duct tape fastening that will pass inspection.

Be forewarned you guys, Big Brother is definitely out to get us (and our money).
SirAndy
yupp, got a $100 ticket for not having a front license plate up here in SF lascht year ...

I got a $50 one while parked at LAX. While I was working there for crying out loud.

On a related note...I'm doing my online traffic school class. Sux anyways. Still have to go take a final exam somewhere in San Berdoo or in front of a notary.

And no, I don't have my front plate on because I keep bumping into things and it drops off.

Duct tape...gud.

$75 ticket in Anchorage, Ak. Parked on the street, license plate in the front window of my 74 VW Bus.

Tried to argue it but not a chance.

Yup, this is one of those "discretionary" tickets ..... Cops can, and often do, over-look a front license plate "violation" when they have some "Real" crime to deal with. But if you are running a performance type car, in suburbia, or beach/downtown, areas..... they will get you for not having it attached. I actually had mine in the trunk (front) no good, must be attached to front of car!
When car is lowered, this presents a problem, as you are always smacking/bending your plate ... Guess they found another revenue source..... cool_shades.gif

Already have photo radar in Portland and Beaverton. They have the red light cameras at intersections and the speed cameras that move around in a white van. Co-workers have gotten a few, they send you a ticket in the mail like a week later, complete with a photo of you commiting the crime. (looks like a crazy mugshot of you in your car). When you speed through one there is a flash when your picture gets taken, that is how you know something will probably show up in the mail. It Sucks, mad.gif

Oh. F**K. It's time to change continents again.

The UK has VERY agressive speed camera enforcement. I hate the ferking things. This coupled with the "Oh you went 36 in a 35 zone so we'll quadruple your insurance" attitude over here is a recipe for hell and suckage.

How 'bout Scottsdale, AZ? From the Arizona Republic:

This year, digital enforcement stations issued 9,091 citations and speed vans nabbed 15,015 drivers between Jan. 1 and July 31.

and:
How many tickets has the new Frank Lloyd Wright photo enforcement system sent out since it started?

In the first 72 hours of operation, the total in both directions was 1,295 detected violations. That is a 45 mph zone. We have a 10-mile grace threshold at all of the fixed sites and in all of the speed zones, except for school zones. Eleven is what they refer to loosely as "the trigger speed." If you're going 11 mph over at any of the six intersection sites or the Frank Lloyd Wright midblock site, you will get a ticket in the mail. If you are in a school zone, the margin of grace is only 5 mph. School zones are done only by mobile vans. If you are doing 6 mph or more in a school zone, you will get a ticket.

Be careful out there. Once your municipality realizes the revenue potential, you're next...

Well one of the advantages of living in (on?) the "Island nation of New Mexico", as my freind calls it (AKA the manyana state). No front plates are issued, so no chance of photo radar.!!!!
Good luck to those of you in more oppressive states liek the Socialist Republic of Kalifornia!
anthony
Traffic enforcement in the Bay Area (outside of SF) doesn't seen very agressive to me. I did get a front license plate ticket in tahoe in addition to a 8mph over chicken shit speeding ticket. That said I'm probably going to put front plates on my cars very soon - I just don't want to give them any reason to pick me out from the crowd.

Hey that's my place! smile.gif

except for the "lower taxes, reasonable gasoline prices" part. headbang.gif

Never had a front plate on my bug, only got hassled once. Told the cop I lost it, got off with a warning and was told to replace it.

We had photo radar, the then gov got booted for it. Now the current gov says if the municipality wants to have PR they can do it themselves. Bunch of chickenshits don't want to get booted like the NDP (gov) party. So far most municipalities don't think it's worth it and the local cops don't want to collect cash for the municipalities as well.

Niether does Indiana, but I do have two plates. My old plate from 1997, ITSA914, is on the front and the current crappy metal/plastic/carbonfiber plate they use now on the back with MYGOKART.

Back in the mid 90's when the Bulls were good basketball team I had novelity plate that looked like and Illinois plate with Da Bulls on the front of my truck with my Indiana plate on back.

Went to Canada and hard time crossing back in the USA in Port Huron because I couldn't get the boarder guard/ person to understand that In indiana you only have a rear plate. He kept asking then why do I have an Illinois plate on the front. They made me pull over and after I pointed out that the "Da Bulls" had both upper & lower case letters and real plates are all upper case, they let go on my way. headbang.gif

Funny thing is a month later I was back up there crossing back in to the USA (My Mom is Canadian) pulling a Uhall with furniture from my Grandpa's estate and 20 case of Labbatts Blue cool_shades.gif in it and they never even asked my to open the trailer, just wanted to know what was in it, "just stuff from my Grandpa's estate sale" I said. wink.gif beer3.gif

Did 2 years in Minneapolis. Beautiful there to be sure, but I like more than their 2 seasons (Winter and July 4th) biggrin.gif

And to get this back on topic, why not just put the plate on? Not pretty, but don't give the man an easy reason to stop you....

I know these are probaly illegal but hey... I have a problem with BigBrother.

A friend of mine has something not sure if this is the exact product but unless you look at the plate staiight on you can not see it...

Anyone else have one of these

Photo radar is no big deal if you have a radar detector. The only jammers that work are the lindar/laser jammers aka shifters.

I have no faith in any jammers... The jammer website is just to show the information about the plate covers that are suppose to fake out the cameras....

My front yard, and no front plate required! All the clean air you want, I lived in cally for two years, I left! I had a shack and no yard for what I paid for this place in Michigan.

The laser jammers actually work. Even Escort, a reputable company, makes one. Google "escort sr7" and you'll find info. The Blinder M20 is another. They only block laser. All the other jammers (aka Rocky Mountain) don't work.

tell the cop next time that the plate must have been stolen, and you want him to file the theft report!

In lovely redwood City CA, the cops were writing tickets for having a "For Sale" sign inside your car window while parked on the street. That is until I got one of them tickets, and said, hey this aint right, it aint in the vehicle code, so it never came up in driver licence testing, nor is it posted anywhere in the city. i called the chief of police, and the city council about this. You can not enforce a law that no one is warned about. I went to the state vehicle code, and did find that any city can make up any parking restriction they want, but they can enforce it only if warning signs are posted! In fact the Redwood City law that tickets me, refernced this part of the vehicle code as its authority to give the ticket!

i showed the city the law, and they made the ticket stick, they said file an appeal. I asked them to show me how I am wrong, they did not. I went to the appeal, with all my info on law, and the appeal was turned down, no reason stated, no law to back them up. i then took it to the last level, a hearing with a judge in municiple court. Before the hearing, I called again to the police, and asked them what their argument is aginst my legal findings making the ticket being illegal The cop told me the city has no defence, and is waiting to see if I actually take it to court. the cop then told me the city attorney has told him that i would win, the city has no legal grounds.

I find that the city was collecting $12,000 per year at $25 each, it was a gravey train for them, Well the judge agreed with me, and I won, after about half a year of fighting them, took three more months to get my money back (I had to pay the tickect before appealing! which was bull shit, no trail before punishment, but that is how tickets are done out here.

Anyway after that, the cop told me that the city attorney told them no more tickects for "for sale" signs can be written. Well well, a couple months later, Redwood Cities finest pig was writing the same tickets again, i had to call his Captian, and tell him to stop writing them, he gave some BS excuse, and then i told him he better drop the tickets on them people (whom I had phone numbers for) He said he could not drop the tickets, that they would have to take it to court. i told him that he does have legal power to drop any ticket written by his dept for any just cause (per vehicle code) I told him i would call the people who got the tickets. he was shocked, and ask me to have them call him, and he would drop them, and he said they would not write them anymore.

So here we have a mid sized city in a major urban area getting away with a crooked ticket scam that is illegal. The kept the ticket fine at $25 to discourage folks from fighting it, because they have made the process so difficult to fight the ticket (i.e. two reviews with the city as judge (talk about biased judge) plus you have to pay the fine before the second review (each review can take other thirty days to render judgement, and each time they ran out the clock) , then you can go to municple court with a real judge but you have to pay a court fee first. Months of time for a $25 ticket.

Guess they figured no one would waste some much time on a $25 ticket.

To top it all off, the cops, the city attorney, the city council person all knew from the moment I showed them the california vehicle code that they were wrong, they had no defense, they never answered my charges during there own city ran appeals process, even thought they admitted to me theat they were wrong. Then to top it all off, months later they start writing tickets again, and it was even the same cop!

Bunch of weassles in the Redwood City PD, and City Attorney, and Council.

By the way, that Council member is now running for state office, ugh!!!

I got a no front plate ticket while my car was parallel parked on the side of my house in SF!

dmenche914,

why not send all your info to the local papers? and 60 Minutes? Sounds like this is the type of story they would love to do. Some lawyer would love to file a class action suit on this I'm sure. Name names, kick ass.
campbellcj
Sigh, I am pretty sure I would have avoided the stop if I had not kept the smoke colored plastic rear cover installed by the PO. I think the combination of a covered rear plate PLUS no front plate was the trigger.

Seriously, somewhere around 3-5% of all cars I see on daily basis here have no front plates. In other words, look left towards oncoming highway traffic at any moment and 1 out of the 20-30 cars you see will have no front plate. In particular many of the big Benz's, Ferraris and so forth seem to never have them installed from day one.

I personally have no problem with red-light photo ticketing as that is a real safety issue and people that run reds routinely should be nailed before they kill somebody. However photo-radar speeding citations are only loved by the ultra liberals and the gub'mint revenue collectors IMHO. Why don't they focus on important law enforcement issues instead? Cuz that doesn't pay...

Thanks Howard. My driveway is 1200 feet long and is paved, it has two really nice curves that are great for testing 914's. I get it up to 60 mph before I have to hit the brakes. The blur in the pic is a scratch on my 5 year old digital camera. I just got pulled over the other day and did not have my proof on insurance, $145.00 later, I won't forget to put it in my glove box again. OBTW the back yard is almost that big, I mow almost 10 acres! It takes me about a six-pack to mow it! biggrin.gif

They have tons of those photoradar boxes in Holland. The solution around where Jeroen lives (was it you Jeroen?) is to mangle the boxes so they point to the sky!!! haha I laughed at all those cameraboxes while I was speeding at 120kph.....

All you see is a flash when they record you going by...

Sanity time, folks! You wanna drive on the roads in your state, ya agree to follow the laws. If your state requires a front plate, ya gotta run it ................. Whiney crybabies. You can always move to a state that doesn't require one. Like Florida. Adios, and enjoy the breezes! Or you could always start riding your bicycle ................ And, BTW, in CA ANY covering over the license plate is illegal, be it one of those photo radar gizmos or a clear plastic bag, and the plates must be securely affixed to the car in the appropriate place. Wire ties and duct tape don't get it, legally. The Cap'n
