Going through the Tweeks site I noticed an air filter for a 70-73 OEM round. (they have a different number for 70-72 914/6)
Part number 401 154.
Has anyone tried the fit of this in the oil bath filter assembly?

no. but if it's the same dia. i don't see any reason why not. of course you'll have to find a way to remove the metal mesh from your old one ...
i just went and got the later style assembly with the paper element from the junk-yard.

'73 1.7L came with the plastic housing and paper filter. The housings are around.
