I replaced the tungsten sealed-beams with the Hella H4s that take bulbs. The bulbs that came with the lenses aren't too impressive.

What are the best bulbs (and wattage) people run with these lenses using stock wiring and relays?

Best to get the HP headlight relay kit & upgrade to 80/100w bulbs.

55/65w is the best you can do with stock wiring & relays, so the $25+/- spent for the relay kit is worth it.

I did it on our 88 Westy Vanagon & it made a huge difference - wished I'd done it 24 years ago when new!

agreed - got em on my sixer for many yrs

you can't run that wattage thru the stock headlite switch, so you must get the relays

concours judges don't like them tho - "non-oem" as it were

Yeah, but do you get a true low beam AND high beam? I got a kit for my Audi a few years back and it said it included high beam but it was marginally better at best. What about blinding others, did you point your lights down or do you blind people and say 'tough luck'. Is there some kind of beam cut-off for non-HID engineered headlights?

Think I will go with 85/100 h4 bulbs and relays. Everything I read about HID in a non-HID lamp is bad news.

They sell a dual-filament kit that gives you both high and low beam. This will retrofit into H4 lenses, which are purchased separately from the kit. The lens/HID package is around $300.

Too many people out there "upgrade" lighting without regard to the rest of the people out on the road.

I drive a fairly tall vehicle most of the time (Honda Element) and I am constantly blinded by improperly aimed headlights. It is FAR more about the aiming than the wattage when it comes to blinding your fellow travelers. I also bought blue tinted lamps for the Element. After being blinded, I find that I focus back on the road much more quickly with the blue tint and my eye doctor says that it is common to be able to do that especially with aging (46 year old) eyes.

The Bus Depot stuff is 1/2 the price. I'd be concerned with how it ties in with the stock plugs (blig plastic shielded boxes).

All doable though...

I think these kits are meant to be near the headlights, as I am sure they were made on front engined/front battery cars.

Here's the Bus Depot kit. Seems to be the best for our application. Might feasibly mount under the crank covers up front for a clean install.

I went with Travis' suggested vendor and bought the harness, 3 100/80 bulbes (1 spare) and the euro H4 7" lamps for about $200. Should be a HUGE improvement and I will not be blinding oncoming people.

So who wants to buy my perfect DOT approved H4s with 55/60 bulbs for $20 plus shipping which were a big upgrade from the standard sealed beams which did not require relays?

I got the headlight conversion kit and the H4 55/100 watt bulbs for a total of $72.00 including shipping.

Did you buy the relay kit? You should purchase and install that before you put your brights on -- my understanding is that the stock switch and wiring isn't sized to handle the 100w output.

My retired electrician is going to wire it up for me, and get whatever relays are required for it at Radio Shack, and also install the PWM so I can tone down the air craft landing lights if a person wants to utilize them in town without burning something up.

Maybe when the weather becomes more favorable this spring.
