Suicide Trunk...

A (slight) brush with fame. I purchased that car (well kinda that car) in 2002 to get its 18 year-old fresh 2.0 engine. It was a rust free '74 that had been sitting in 3 different owner's garages as a disassembled roller since 1984. The engine was completely rebuilt in '84 and had never been installed. Paid $1200. The engine is now in my '74.
I sold a few parts (Korijo has the ss heat exchangers) and then sold the roller to my friend and neighbor Craig (Camp 914) Laughlin for $400. As is so often the case, he gets the last laugh and the $$$. Within two weeks of the purchase he sees an ad in the local paper, "rust free 914 wanted, drive train not important." Craig calls the guy, he looks, asks how much and Craig says $1200. The rest is history. Buyer is local collector with pockets to China (like really deep, has Carrera GT, Enzo and GT40 on the way, among others). He turns the car over to local car builders at Rothsport and 2 years later Britain is posting the results.

I love it.

Much as i don't like to see something this nice not used, it's a a winner. Modified BMW hood hardware on rear trunk and fabricated engine cover to clear FI is just beautiful. Roll bar faired into targa hoop and lots more. Shame it will probably never see the track or street.

I think it will see the track and probably some street time. Owner had his Carrera GT at a local track day at PIR earlier this summer. I just hope I'm there when it happens.

I would like to check out some of the details up close, if anybody happens to know where it might turn up next. It's too bad that it is designed with some vintage racer elements but IMHO would probably need a lot of rework (including the A-pillars and windscreen) in order to actually be driven with any of the major clubs/sanctioners.

Hard to tell - is it Phoenix Red or one of the other orange-ish colors!?!?!

Word on the street is that the car got a little flogging at GAF. I assume it was during the "teardown" part of the last day. Something about sliding the car sideways for 350 feet and doing doughnuts.

Maybe it's al just a rumor.

Does anyone know this guy? There's a C-GT doing mulholland runs who's a bit of a loonie, winding through the spandex brigade @ 100+mph. He'll take one of the guys out sooner or later and get the road closed to recreational driving. Same guy??? If so, somebody talk to him.

The car lives in Portland, OR and its "coming out" was at GAF. I suspect the owner may not even have been in Ventura. I wasn't there, but from the pics it appears it was on display at the booth of the shop that built it, a well known northwest race shop called Rothsport, which also includes a race parts supplier called Rennsport. High end, high quality outfits.

Spoke to the owner,Page Stevens at the Sunset Porsche swap meet. He plans to drive it on the street and if allowed on the track at PIR.
I will be asking for a ride.

It appears to be a Varioram 3.6L or possibly a 3.8L 993 engine. The 3.6L version was standard in 993's from '96 to '98. Most 914 conversions use the '95 engine because the intake manifold is lower profile and doesn't require the engine lid to be modified like this one was.

Howard, The nutty Carrera GT (dark grey or blk?) must of been down here on Sunset Strip last week doing Nascar lane changes. The thing comes on its variocams and gets loose on the street...almost launched himself into Miyagi's ! A V10 sound of its own, unfortunately the guy needs a serious DE lesson at Willow.
I don't think that this is the guy that owns the orange Rothsport though.

Yep. We where sending 914 people over from the WEVO booth to shift the orange car. Rothsport sells/installs all the WEVO components. It has a WEVO 915 shift setup in it with a WEVO shifter. Good stuff. Jeff "GamRoth" is a cool guy. I sold him the tailights for this car prior to the event. He used toy build all the GT3RSR trannies for our Grand Am team last year.

That CGT owner was the late V.R.Alexander
He had a mishap a few years ago in a 911 Turbo during a closed course event on a public highway ( Silver State Classic?).
BTW, Miagi's is Pink Taco today
