Full Version: Drops to idle fast and then chokes

I have the DJet system on my 75 2.0.
When the engine is all warmed up, and i come to a stop and the engine drops to idle, it sputters and chokes. Then if it continues to run it will slowly ramp back up to proper idle. Sounds like it just drops down to idle too fast for the old DJet.

The engine runs like a top except for when it is warmed up and that little idle problem kicks in.

Is there anything that can slow down the revs so it doesn;t just drop down to idle other than using the gas pedal? I took off all the air pump stuf years ago, so that system is not there anymore.

I have the same problem...Been asking, but no one has helped so far...

Tried all the vaccuum leak theories, sprayed so much brake and carb cleaner, all the paint is gone...

Mine is electrical because it occurs mostly with the lights etc. on...

This weekend, I'm going to tighten the Alt belt (new one) and see if that makes a difference and check voltage through various points on the motor...

Do you have an RPM hunt problem or is your idle steady once it comes back...

Do you have a decel valve installed...Mine (1975 2.0)does not...

Thanks michelko, I'll give it a try...

Won't it do that if the car is lean? Maybe try a few clicks rich on the ECU....? Just an easy thought.

Maybe test your head temp. sensor???
p914
Mine doesn't hunt as the mixture is good. It will slowly come up to steady idle after it drops when I come to a stop. I believe my decel valve is not there either. All the electrical is good and alternator is tight.
This is the only little quirk that I haven;t ironed out. Been a while since I looked on rennlist and will try that.
Thanks for reminding me.

Tod:

New head sensor...Put one in during the engine rebuild...

Rusty:

Yea...I just read the article that michelko suggested and I will try the ECU Lean/Rich adj. tonite...I am about one click to clockwise of centered, now...

We'll see...

The article michelko suggested, said to check the "idle " Rich/Lean adjustment...Are we talking about the same adjustment (ECU Knob) or is there another one I don't know about...

Thanks guys...

Along with the ecu adj. you may need to adjust the idle screw on the intake.

It needed a valve adjustment. Didn't put more than 3-4K miles on it since the last adjustment.
Cured the die out problem.
Thanks for the input guys.

Looks like you were right on time for that valve adj.

Seems like adjustments would last up to 6k miles.. confused24.gif

From the first bus I owned I have always heard every 3K-4K miles. Makes for a lot of valve adjustments when taking a roadtrip form Alaska to the lower 48. Lets see - Parking garage in Seattle, friends driveway in Arizona, some campground in B.C. (thought I could make it back to AK, bus was runnig like crap). Just to name a few

I think the decel valve was taken out a year or so ago.
The valve adjustment did the trick.

oh well I guess if it is every 3-4k so be it.

There's a shop around the corner from mine that has a dyno, I think I'll have them hook it up to see what this old beast is putting out.
