The steering shaft has a "grooved ball bearing" on it (that's what Haynes calls it). It's located "inside" the dash area, behind the steering column switch assembly so you don't normally see it. On every 914 I've ever driven, this bearing is really noisy and sounds like it's full of sand. Since I've got the whole steering assembly in pieces I figured it was a good time to lubricate this bearing to quiet it, but what do I use to lubricate it?

wheel bearing grease? thats what i'd use

Something that can be sprayed into the bearing seems a little more practical than wheel bearing grease.
