Picking up a 70 914 2056 today in San Diego and headed to PA over the next seven days. Me and another fellow enthusiast are in flight as we speak and pick the car up this afternoon. Should be the trip of a lifetime for both of us.
This is a rebirth of a love taken away in 1989 when someone collided with my 72 2.0.
So stoked about this car!
So follow along on our XC adventure as I will be posting pics and videos along the way!

Add your VIN to the VIN database. There's a section for your story and a section for a picture link. If the VIN is already listed, make a second entry for your new ownership.
Have a gret trip back to PA ! smile.gif

I admire anyone who can drive a 914, or any car, from Cali, Colombia, to a destination in North America, what with the jungles, rivers, bad roads, insurgents and all.

Since you are in Diego, cruise down the Gas Lamp District and avoid going to TJ at all costs. LOL

Have a safe trip. That sounds like so much fun. beerchug.gif

Well guys, as Jim mentioned we had a rough start. Went to fuel up and the car flooded, surely my fault, and we killed the already aging battery. After having a replacement dropped in by AAA, we were off towards our first destination, the Mohave desert and Las Vegas. Unfortunately due to the delays we it was dark by the time we hit the desert. But, we did get some experience with the car and understanding of the power this car makes thanks to the long straight aways in eastern CA. The car has a superior suspension and the power to boot. But the tail shift tranny flat out sucks. A lot of slop in the shift linkage too. Bit with a little finesse and love we made it into Las Vegas tonight and having a little fun along the way. I've never been here before so this is truly a treat. Tomorrow morning we head out again trudging our way across America in a 42 yr old4 vehicle and hoping for a better day. This is my 25 th straight hour without sleep and I'm ready for sleep. Hopefully tomorrow and the remainder of the trip hold better days for the road ahead. Pics tomorrow night and hopefully some video too!

You did good. You made it over Cajon pass and all the other mountain areas into Vegas. Weather has been perfect but I bet you had some wind along the way.

I would so be worried about overheating. LOL

What is the next stop??? Utah??
Tedman5
Jim's driving now so I have some time to update. We left Vegas this morning and headed out to Hoover dam with Grand Canyon as today's destination. The car is running very well and we have the roof of enjoying the fresh desert air. We will be staying at a villa tonight near the canyon and dining well for a change. I plan on finding some time tonight to upload some pics and short videos shot by our GoPro HD cockpit mounted cam. I'll probably put a link to YouTube for the videos in my first post and pics will be added along in the thread. Sorry for the delay. We had a horrible start with battery problems and human fatigue. Last night at the casino I felt like I was walking on the moon after being up 24 and a mad dash up 15 to Vegas. Now we're back on schedule and having a blast. This car makes some serious power with the 2056 and dual Dellortos. Anyway thanks for all your interest and inspiring comments. This is a fun but challenging trip. FYI, we are now east bound on 40 for the remainder until we reach 81 N to head to PA. Cheers!

agree.gif You owe it to yourself to get off the Interstate for a bit and get a real driving experience. A good run through some noteworthy twisties will become the centerpiece of your great adventure.
poorsche914
If you take the Pellissippi Parkway exit (376B) I could meet you at the other end (about 15 miles) and then from there take a 15-20 min drive to Foothills Parkway. FP is another 15-16 miles that runs along the ridge (great scenery on both sides) and comes out near the beginning of the Dragon. Figure 45 min to an hour on the Dragon (one trip up and back) and then back out via the Parkway and to the interstate. A 3-4 hour diversion (depending on time of day and day of the week)
If it hits your schedule right, you could overnight in Knoxville area or even Maryville or Townsend (closer to the Dragon).

PM me and maybe I can get some other teeners together piratenanner.gif

Hasn't broke 190! The desert was great. We're in Amarillo now. Car runs fantastic Mike. Thanks for building such a mean motor. The thing flies! Oh, and the front end doesnt lift at 115! Maybe its the luggage. wink.gif

Good day! Made it in to Amarillo TX where we shook off the cold and ate TX beef for dinner. 600+ miles with no issues other than freezing our butts off in 21 degree temps this morning.
mike373
Ha!!! Yes....I'm sure the luggage helped. Yeah.....sorry about the cold factor. I bet you guys are dying for some heat in that thing. Howbout a second hand, portable coleman gas heater at Jim's feet?

Love the pic guys. How many miles to go?

Mike

Well, we clearly need more detail. One picture for the whole trip to this point is quite disappointing and is not acceptable!

If we are to live vicariously through this adventure we need the trip DOCUMENTED! poke.gif

In Nashville tonight and hitting the Dragon tomorrow at around 12:30.
We are having a carb backfiring problem in one carb. Its at low-mid-range rpm and believed to be an idle jet begining to clog. It hasn't been too bad....yet.
They are Dellorto 40 DRLA with Jet Dr jets. Any suggestion on how to quickly resolve this?
We have run Berrymans thru it with no avail. The filters were cleaned last night and appear to be in good condition.
anderssj
Very pretty car!

Low-mid rpm carb back-fire sounds like clogged idle jet, but I thought the dell jet doctors were supposed to eliminate most clogging. I would still pull both idle jets on the offending carb and blow them out. How familiar are you with the dells? Here's a link to an earlier thread with a couple of diagrams if you need them:

Home safely after 3100 miles!! Sorry I didn't update as much as I had planned but living on the road proved to be harder than I thought. I do plan to do a thorough story with pics soon. I appreciate everyone's support and comments and just can't believe I'm back without anything major. The car runs like a champ and can't wait to drive it again.
Oh, and the Dragon was SOOO sick!! Have video to post later.
JawjaPorsche
Glad you made it home. When we didn't hear from you, we feared you were riding shotgun in the cab of a flatbed truck back to PA! Can't wait to read more about your adventure.
poorsche914
Good to hear you made it home safe. Was nice meeting you and Jim.
Was Eurohaus able to fix the carb popping?

I must say Ted and I had a awsome adventure !!
A 42 year old car making a cross country trip with only a few glitches
is just amazing.
Now me on the other hand .... Back locked up in Richmond lol.
poorsche914
The starting point of The Dragon is around the 3:00 min mark.

I like the cockpit view.
Looking forward to seeing your other Dragon videos. piratenanner.gif

Very cool guys... Nice road. The Dragon looks alot like North Central Pa. around Wilkes Boro and Hazeton to me? Car sounds like it's running great, did you use GPS for speedometer? I need to figure out what to use mine reads 90 doing 65 I think due to tires' diameter being smaller the stock. Tim how's it feel to be back in a 914 after so many years?
Tedman5
@Strucken... Yes we were using an app called GPS SpeedTracker for IPhone. Worked very well and even tracks all the data such as altitude, trip, elapsed time and so on. Very cool app. It even has a heads up display for the windshield at night. Highly suggest it if your speedo is working.
