The tranny still has that drip drip drip.....

so the question is, can you replace a side seal without taking the whole tranny apart? Obviously is has to be out of the car, but how big a job is this really?

The output shaft seal? Where the CV bolts?

yes. Where the CV flange meets the tranny.

Drain the fluid (you can save it and reuse if you have a clean catch container) and make sure it's the blue SWEPCO lube. Take off the CV joint on the side you're replacing. Undo the bolt in the center of the stub axle that holds it in place. Remove the stub axle. Remove the seal WITH A SEAL PULLER! It's really easy with that $5 tool. Put in the new seal and put the stub axle back in. Torque the bolt to the appropriate torque (Haynes) and reconnect the CV. Make sure both roll pins are in your CV, you use a good CV gasket, and you have CV bolts with the Schorr (?) washers. DONE! Should be able to finish in 3 hours max.

Just remember to use a screwdriver or something to prevent the rotation of the stub while you're getting the bolt out.
