We just bought a new car for my wife. What I'm really envious of is the remote control door locks. I'd love to have that for my 914. Anyone out there ever tried to do this on a 914?

Andrew, there are "universal" kits available for this.....eBay, JC Whitless, AA (I think)...you might also check with some of the car stereo install shops..........

Lots of kits and fairly inexpensive if you look. Dont get a remote starter though, bad idea with a stick for obvious reasons.

Check out some of the web pages for Hot Rods. There are lots of different kits. You can get one that would open your doors, both trunks and engine compartment. Kits start at around $100 for two doors. More doors and a security system can get serious expensive. There are also kits for power windows. Check out some of your local weekly hot rod gatherings and talk to the owners about sourcing of parts. Generally, they love talking about their rides and where they get their parts.

I bought a 4 door power lock kit for my Saturn 6 or 7 years ago. It has worked perfectly all this time. One thing that I really like is that there are no switches to install (or be seen). You can lock and unlock the doors with the remote, or if you manually lock or unlock either of the front doors, all of the locks will do the same.

All good suggestions, thanks guys.

I added remote door locks to my 914. Already had an alarm system, so all there was to do was mount the actuators in the doors and attach them to the rod that locks/unlocks them. Then run the wires. To make every thing work smoothly, i had to clean and lubricate the moving parts. Worked great! The actuators cost me about $12 each, i think retail is prolly around $20 or so. Alarm was a freebie, but most of them will have provisions for power locks.

Whose actuators did you use and how did you control them?

I know that Renegade hybrids in Vegas has a kit.
Don't know what it costs...

The autoloc stuff is great. I bought a kit from them and installed
it on my wifes miata 4 years ago. Not a single problem.
I haven't done an install in my 914 but it was a bit of pain in the miata.
My only complaint now is that since then autoloc has become
very popular and their prices have more than doubled since then.

These guys have similar products for substantially less money:

If you buy the full kit, not just actuators, you will get the control
module, and you can even order a kit that includes a keyless
entry remote.

The "universal" type kits are the way to go since they include
the lock/unlock switches inside the actuator (no lock/unlock buttons)
which means you can lock/unlock the doors from the key or either
of the manual locks, even keyless if you spring for the keyless option.

I don't remember who made the actuators, i got them from a friend that had an automotive stereo and security business. I would think that an auto stereo shop could hook you up with some door lock actuators. JL troy makes some inexpensive alarm/keyless entry modules. The wires from the actuators would hook right up to it, might need a separate relay though. Sorry that i haven't done one in a while, can't remember exactly. But can find out if you want.
