Saw an add on ebay for a sideshift shifter. I will be converting to a sideshift tranny when my 2.0 is ready but I thought that everything forward of the firewall could stay the same.

Yes. Everything from the knob down is different. Even the firewall bushings are different (there's a special one for converting a tailshift car to sideshift).

you'll need the whole crap-o-la. tranny, shifter linkage, shifter itself, adaptor bushing for the firewall, sideshifter engine mount bar ...
