Much better selection in high-quality (aftermarket) wheels, and 15-16" race rubber will probably not get any more common in the next couple years either.

I know I've seen race 914s with 17's but most were flared cars running large Kinesis, BBS or Fikse wheels with Hoosiers or slicks.

My car is unflared and so I would be looking at 17x7's with 205/40 Hoosiers. This would give me a 1.6% (just about 10mm) taller tire than the 205/50R15's I'm running now. I am thinking that would be a good thing, i.e. I could keep the slightly shorter tires for short-track or autox use and the taller ones for big road courses.

I still might end up with 16x7 fuchs due to cost, but the 17" concept is intriguing and there sure are some nice wheels in the 17-18" sizes these days.

I don't think the extra weight would be highly significant, because some of the modern forged race wheels are very light and strong. And Hoosiers are very light too.

Any thoughts/ideas?

When I deamed about 17" wheels I found out that there are not so good selection of 7x17 whees with P-bolt pattern. Most 17" size wheels are atleast 8" wide, which is IMHO too much for narrow body 914.

The second reason is that they are all with´wrong´offset. You should use spacers. Only Revolution makes 7x17 wheels with right bolt pattern and right offset for 914 (ET 35mm).

If you go and order 3-piece custom built Kinesis, BBS or Fikse wheels, then the imagination is the limit...... I believe you can get what ever you want, but, of course, that will cost a lot too. It was the third reason for me to accept ´only´ 16" wheels.....

Hoosier still makes race tires in 13 inch size.
CART runs 15 inchers (IIRC).

There's lots of go fast stuff I NEED before looking at big wheels.....trick shox, trans, more tricker suspension....yada,yada.

We recently test fitted 17x9's on the front of Jason Samson's Silver Rabbit flared caged 914 2.0. No problem.

I think the factory 17x7.5's would work just fine. This is what came from the factory on almost all 993's after 96. The fronts are everywhere much like the 16x6's are everywhere.

he's got 17" 993 turbo wheels under a narrowbody 914
(dunno what size wheels/tires/spacers he used though)
he did have to pull the rear fenders a bit, but that's hard to notice

The Boxster turbo twist 17s are getting to be out of favor for those with a Boxster. They are wanting the 18s. So I would look for those to be the frugal way to go. Try ebay or any of the 986 classifieds.

PS: I see wheel enhancement has sets of 4 17x7 used turbo twists for $800, if all else fails you can do that.

I had 17" kinesis supercup wheels on my 928, they're about 20-22lbs each. those do come in 7" width, but they're not forged. good thing is they're modular so you can replace just the rim half if you need to, but even the cast sets are somewhat expensive. you'll probably have to get custom offset which is even more $$$.

It's my understanding that you can easily fit the same size wheel/tire combo that'll fit on the early 930 Turbos on 914's with GT flares

I think Ernie King (bad-ass 3.8RS powered Silver 914-6 GT) is running the rim combo that is the same size that came on the 964 Turbo S's...same offset and all.

Oh yeah, another option is to get some 17's made up custom from Fuchs centers.

Jack Olsen (Rennlist & Pelican BBS regular) did that, using cheap 16x6's as donors. WAAAAY cheaper than the Fikses or Kinesis kinda stuff.

I have a lead on some cheap Fuchs 16x7's locally. I think I'll pursue that for now. Could get 6 or 8 wheels for the price of one of the fancy-shmancy new ones.

The car in the pic is actually midnightblue (mid-nineties p-color) sorry for the crappy pics, I lost the bigger ones...
And yes, we do have smog-laws for painting cars here as well.
All paints are waterbased nowadays (and they are absolute crap IMO)
Funny thing is that waterbased paints are actually more toxic.

I saw these 7X17" Revolution RZX wheels on a stock-body posted somewhere. Liked them well enough to save the picture:



TTS Racing has them: TTS Racing RZX 914 wheels with 911 bolt pattern

I like these because they have the correct 35mm offset. I think the owner was running 205/45s on them. Not sure, but the rear fender looks pulled to me. The wheels are cast, so I'm not sure I'd use them for racing (anyone else have experience?), but for street or autox they'd be nice.

It also appears that they have the 7X15 RFX wheels with the four bolt pattern for $190 a copy right now.

No connection with TTS; I just thought they were sharp looking wheels.

Why don't you guy's buy the style wheel you want and just redrill the bolt circle? I had a set of HRE 3 piece light alloy 16" X 10"s and 15" X 8"s with a 4X100 pattern. I just had a second 4 hole pattern put in for the 914. My friend Dave has them on his 914 now.
