I have a Porsche 914 2.0 (100 HP stock). It has the 3 bolt heads, which are alone worth the price I'm asking. It was supposed to be running well when it was pulled years ago, and until I left it outside for the last two years and water got into the cylinders and the motor won't turn over 360 degrees. The cylinders need to be pulled, the rust removed with a ball hone (Amazon.com for $35) and probably new rings put in. Or you can buy cylinders for about $250 new. I haven't seen the heads, but I'd give it a valve job or at least lap the valves since it's apart.
A lot of people put these engines in Bugs, either with Joe Cali's book (which is kind of a budget project, he uses stock VW tin that he's modified) or do it with one of Jake Raby's kits, which makes it entirely bolt on.
These engines are much more difficult to overheat than a type I (Bug engine) this is why they put them in buses from I think 1973 or 1974 on and no one ever has to line bore these engines for a rebuild, because the blocks are made of aluminum instead of magnesium. The 3 bolt heads were only offered on the Porsche 914, the other displacements 1.7 and 1.8 had a much more common head. The 3 bolt heads are very difficult to find, check out the prices at ebay.
If you want to learn more about a type IV engine in a Bug, check out Jake Raby's websites, one of which is here http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/store/
He does a burn out with a 2.2 type IV in a bus here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAOENczTgME
This link will take you to a list of type IV links including a forum http://www.tunacan.net/t4/links.htm
The engine comes with alternator, distributer Bosche 009, exhaust tubes for 914, all tin etc. It is sold 'as is'. Serious buyers only, please.
