Full Version: What is the 914 club?

Ok, I can't be the only one here that is confused.
1) Who is in charge of the 914 Club?

2) What is the Club?

3) Where is the Club located?

4) When was it formed?

5) How do you join?

6) Is there dues?

7) Is there any plans for a National event?

Be nice....
Brad Roberts
Ok.

1. I'm heading it up right now.

2. The club first started with the dgi.net/914/ site. It was based in Oakley Ca. by a guy named Alex (his last name escapes me). Alex passed away and prior to that had held events on the west coast and helped support events in the Midwest (MUSR). There was a big power struggle and conflics between several of the 914 members when things started to go downhill in 1997 or so. The website (dgi) basically stopped being maintained at that point. The classifieds where being handled by Glenn Stazak (changing the monthly title) Glenn was empowered by the person who built the dgi site to run it. Several meetings where held over 2-3 years about what "we" the 914 people where going to do with the club... Well... guess what.. nothing happened. In May of 2001 the person who actually hosted the dgi site moved the contents to a new server that didnt have Perl installed on it and the classifieds broke. I imediately registered 914world.com/.net/.org. Again we held meetings to "fire" up this new site. Almost 2 years went by and I relized nothing was being done. I took it back over and decided to make a go of it. Everybody loved the original site. I wanted to use some of it to keep the same feel but was told I had to work with Glenn Stazak if I wanted to use any of the copy-writed material. Seeing personally that nothing ever happened with the old site when Glenn was involved led me to do this on my own with help from other people in the 914 society. ALL the graphics are done by Jeroen from the Netherlands, the server is free as well as the bandwidth. That is it in a nutshell. Some of the facts where left out...

3. Club is really not located anywhere. The plan is to have all the little satellite 914 groups come together under one name.

4. This one was formed a few weeks ago. I would like to say it was created back in 1996 by Alex and his girlfriend Barbara. I'm not trying to recreate the wheel. Just give 914 people a common place not "sponsored" by any one vendor (vendor neutral)

5. You joined when you signed up for this BBS. I will have something more formal in the near future.

6. We already have National events: WCR, MUSR, ECR.. so forth and so on.

More to come soon. I need to speak with Chuxter about the 914 SIG and all the other people who put on the 914 events around the globe.

Look What I dug up on the last page. happy11.gif "B" you've held true to your vision. I say this is not yours anymore. This site belongs to the people.
Brad Roberts
Bastard.

The site does belong to the people.. but guess what.. "people" need leadership. A whole bunch of indians with no chief is worthless. They all stand around waiting for the next buffalo to come by instead of going after the buffalo..LOL

I don't even remember this thread. An oldie but a goodie...

Things where much easier when we had 100 members. I recall the orginal 5 people who tested with me prior to going live with this setup. It still runs on my home server. Those where the days.

Someone say buffalo? Mmmmm tastes great ...less filling.

You forgot to mention the "all914 chat" prior to 914club joining the either.

Actually I found this site by searching for the dgi.net site. It had been a while since I had posted on that site. I searched everywhere but it quickly became clear that it was gone unsure.gif I always knew about the bird board but only used it for the tech articles and not so much the forum.

Truth is I love to read the forums here since it seems like such a great group of people. This was confirmed at the WCC '04. beerchug.gif

I'll be sad to see you go Brad. You've really started a great thing here and I share your concerns about it after what you said happened to dgi.net after it's leader left (died).

We'll keep the light on for ya.

I am one of the oldest members and have had many hours of enjoyment and gleened a lot of good info. I have tried to particapate in all the events in are area (so cal) and do miss the participation of Brad when he gets to busy because he is the most Knowageable 914 Guru that I know of. Brad you have been a great help in my quest to spend way to money on my yellow beauty to make it as new as possible. I will support you any way I can. Good Luck

There were some very funny nights in the all914 chat... especially due to that name-changing feature.

I had my favorite chat log saved... but it got deleted by accident a year ago.

Man... that was fun. mueba.gif

Bernie

Hey Bernie, Did you mean literally oldest? I see you were number 36 to join. You have been here for awhile. I too joined when it first started up not really knowing what was going to happen. I dont remember who turned me on to this place but it had to be one of the first 16 members cause I am number 17. I was just a 914 owner looking for a home and a place to get information about locating parts and technical advice. This and the PP board were where I found it. This board not only has the advice, it is much more fun than any other source with much more great people. The WCC was without a doubt, the best event I have ever attended with a vehicle. I used to be into custom vans back in the 70's and attended lots of van club events. They were fun and seemed to be more frequent than the 914 events but the quality of people is much better with the 914's. I think the van clubs were more bikers than anything else, not that they were not fun, but sometimes things got a little out of hand and there were fights and stuff that often ended up with someone getting hurt. The crowd here is more docile and tame. There isnt that overly rowdy drunken stuper crowd. I truly hope this board doesnt just go away. I think it really does have a place and many of the people here would wind up losing interest in the cars and just fade away. It would be like eliminating telephones and being on a deserted island. No contact with other members, no source for that community feeling. Someone needs to take over for Brad, I am sure he just needs to get away for awhile. He will come back in a few years and I am sure he would pop in from time to time just to see how everything is going. If I can be of any assistance, feel free to ask. I am here if you need me. I never thought of Brad as the leader, instead, I thought of him as a true 914 person with the strongest interest in making the 914 community something that everyone could enjoy and participate in. His ideas were good and he took the time to push it forward and it worked. He has quite a following now. The board doesnt need a leader, the admins can delegate what needs to be done, the other people here are somewhat knowledgeable and that spreads to everyone who asks a question and it gets answered and it is kept on this board forever.
