Ok, so maybe many of you have done it before..... but this past weekend, I buried the needle at 120 mph on a stretch of road.
It was cool
Strange thing though..... later in the evening, I took the Acura on the same stretch of road, and only got to 105 mph before I had to start slowing down.
The acura is rated at 165 HP..... what does that say about the teener? Any guesses?

About 10 years ago, I put some 100+k miles on a daily driver 914 I had. When it reached 200,000 miles, I was prepared, pulled over, took a picture of the 914. Then hoped back in and took a picture of the 914 going 120mph. Pretty cool! Fun huh?

Not sure... either way, how much could my speedo be off??

w/out the tire calculator at my finger tips i'd guess that you'd be only 5-10 mph less than indicated with 60-series tires.
nevertheless, that's fast for a 914.
i've seen 155mph (NOT in a teener), that felt pretty quick...

Matt, I run 205/50's and my speedo reads only 6mph too fast. A 60 should be close on.

Oct 12 2004, 02:52 PM
205/60-15 is REALLY close to stock diameter. My car is within 1 MPH @ 75 Miles per hour. I am justifying this witha one of them "sleeping Policeman" radar sign things. You know the "your speed is" and it displays it.
Best I did was 105 with the stock 1.7L 4200 RPM Maybe coulda squeezed more out but ran out of road.
Can't wait to get the 2.0L in there and open it up.

FWIW, I am running 205/60-15, and was curious b/c according to my odometer I was getting higher mpg's than I should have been. I took a GPS and went for a drive, and found that my speedo reads approx 4 mph fast. I've played with the tire size calculator on this board, and it gives roughly the same margin of error...

Now that I have 205/50's speedo is off ~ 9% that said, I had it over 115 and still pulling with my 1.8L. I think it likes the lower gear from smaller tire. @ 115 it was pushing 5K on tach but felt like it still wanted more.
Scary part is... didn't even feel that fast, these cars are still rock solid even > 100.

Going 120 in a teener feels completely diff than 120 in a 944 turbo...
not saying that i've gone 120 in the 914 though. Tried once, hit about 95 before I decided I didnt want to try any more.... That was before the v8.....

I was driving back from Vega recently and got really tired of this Integra riding mine and everyone else's bumper, so I pulled over to the side of the road to take off the top - no fun cruising at high speeds with the top on.
It wasn't long before I was in his rear-view mirror & there he was right on someones bumper at 80mph. As tempting as it was to ride his I gave him some space and waited for the other car to move to the right lane - then I closed the gap. He wouldn't move over & he couldn't pull away from me. Once we were out of traffic completely and I could pass him on the right side - he pulls over to the right.
Once I was past him he pulls back over into the left lane to follow me. Not today! I just pulled away from him in 5th gear until he was a blur. I didn't even watch the speed - just the road & the mirror.
Then later there was this Mustang GT . . . God I love these 914's.
Enjoy!

i cant wait till i get the suby engine running, i cant wait to see what the car will do with 170 hp and about 180 fp with a redline ( rev limit ) of 7500 rpm. i mean i had it to 110 with the roof off when the 1.8 was in it.
if i did a WAG i would assume somewhere north of 140 mph. but i do plan on doing it once just to find out.

I've only had my 914 to 95...still had alot in the tach to go (was in the 4k's somewhere). Now if we are talking speed (is really stupid to go so far over but everyone does it sometime). I was on a very large divided highway in mid-michigan...no traffic..i'm in my 928...speedo was at 147 and I still had about 1500 rpm to go before redline. Amazing thing is the car never flinched...smooth as a baby's bottom. 928's are scary because they take you to higher speeds so easily!

6200 rpm in 5th with 255/40/17" tires stock 901 you do the math. But the car started a slow weave from one side of the road to the other when I let off of the throttle. I will never do that again

I think its more than a wing. Must be something with alignment. I posted this hoping someone had seen the same problem. I'm with Jim on this one. Had my 78 928 up to 135. Solid as a rock. I did have 400lb front and 270lb rear springs. Bilstiens all around. "S" brakes, S4 wheels. no wings fins or air dams.
The little yellow Teener is quite stable at 105. (must been the 220lb ballast from the passenger) gonna find out what you guys are talking about soon. 150lb rear springs bigger torsion bars up front, Weltmiester front bar and stock size rear bar. Koni adjustable all around and Cow catcher air dam and flip fin spoiler.
Took a Superformance Cobra to 100 and backed out because that thing was all over the place. 535 HP ain't shit if you can't put it down. Alignment is everything.

My stock speedo is way off. It reads at least 20% too high. I know for a fact that it is 30% off at slow speeds. I verified it once with a police radar "your speed is" sign. At 30mph I was actually going 20mph.
I think it's the one thing that has kept me from getting a ticket in the last 3 years of ownership. :-) My speed0 usually says 95-100 on the freeway but I'm really probably going 70-75.

The v8 cars get up over 100 mph at will. It is kinda scary but cool. You can pretty much be going 90 before you get on the freeway on most any on ramp.
I once was checking out my new carb/timing and hit 120 in 4th gear before I got on the freeway.
Now, if I could just make it handle like a 4 cyl car.....

Last time I saw speed over 100 was yesterday, the day before yesterday, the day before that, before that, before that, before that, before that, before that, before that.............
and usually several times a day. That's the nice part about having a turbo 3.0 914 with short gears. Highway entrance ramps are all the runway I ever need.

I didn't have a problem with mine getting "squirrely" when braking down from 120 in a straightaway. I did have the roof on and the windows up. Does that make it better? Better aerodynamics?
I have noticed that when accelerating through a long curve (like one of those "circular" highway on ramps), and being forced to brake......... then the car gets a bit squirrely. What does that mean?

That means you shouldn't brake during a hard turn.
Seriously though. If you are turning very hard, even lifting the throttle can cause the rear end to come around. Someone learned that the hard way on a "fun" run a few weeks ago, he ended up leaving the road. When you lift throttle or brake, weight is transferred to the front wheels and the rear gets light and loses traction. If you feel it getting squirelly at low speeds, then there is something wrong, but otherwise, these cars do that.

When I was a teenager, I had a 914-6 2.7 for a while. Mistake for someone so young. I buried the speedo a number of times at 150mph. The car was set up pretty well and seemed to handle the speeds. One thing I learned was just how fast 150 was. I put the needle well past 150, but figured the speedo was off by 10%, so I figured I was close to 150 give or take. Fun stuff.
The other day while in my teener an SUV almost running me over passed me on a multi lane HWY. I was already cruising around 70. I picked it up a little to catch up to him/her. The SUV jerked to the right lane passing a car only going about 55. Well, my teenage reflex would have been to step on the gas and pass both of them. Instead, my old-age caught me and I applied the brakes quickly slowing down leaving a proper distance between me and the car going 55. I couldn't beleive I did that! It was a total reflex too!
My bigest fear now is what it will cost me if I get a ticket. It is all about the cost, doesn't that suck?!?!
