Thought if I were to bother everyone with this that to develop a good resource would be a nice result.

The thread...

I like my coffee and I can rub my belly and pat my head at the same time so shifting and grabbing for my Joe is a no brainer to get my caffeine fix. beer3.gif

I am kind of tall (6'2") so the stock armrest serves no real purpose for me and I am looking into alternatives.

I have been searching ebay for used armrests / center consoles with built in or pop out cup holders. I think that the pop out type might get too close to my shifting area (although I do have a short shifter installed.)

This pic is one from a Pontiac Bonneville. Looks kind-of fat. I know that dimensions are key here. i.e. the cup holders conflicting with the heater control switch throw and the shift pattern.

I did try searching threads and didn't have much luck.

What have you guys had luck with? confused24.gif

Any advice is appreciated.

Texting while driving. Talking on a cell phone while driving. Applying makeup while driving. Eating or drinking a beverage while driving. ALL distracting and dangerous. Of course if you can pat your head and rub you tummy, drink coffee and shift gears at the same time (safely)? you are a remarkably talented individual. happy11.gif lol-2.gif

Check my thread from back in 2006. Quick and easy cup holder in the ashtray location.

I fabed a simple cup holder from two PVC plubling parts. The base is pretty heavy and hasn't tiped over yet.

I love the tapered / pvc adapter. How ingenious to see that for what it could be whilst strolling through the plumbing section. smile.gif

I also noticed your custom tunnel cover with heater lever slit. That is sharp! Good Job!

I made mine from fiberglass pipe and diamond plate aluminum. Fiberglass pipe from petroleum wholesaler, free sample. Very thin wall and perfect size.

I had bought some stainless cup holders from the marine shop. I was planning on making a taller center pad and inserting them in there. Never did since my car is dead.

Good God man - speaking of petroleum wholesalers, that hydraulic e-brake rig looks like something built for use on an oil derrick! What the hell does your coffee mug look like?!? laugh.gif

(Srsly, that e-brake looks sweet! I'll have to go check the previous Sasquatch build threads and see what you did...)

Well if I can't get an arm rest out of it I think that the two finalists for me are:

drum roll please.

The VW Thing / ash tray unit.
Although I am afraid that it might interfere with the heater controls.

HAS ANYONE USED THIS SET UP?
LOOKS LIKE IT MAKES IT HARD TO MANIPULATE THE HEATER CONTROLS.

Or...
If I have room between my extinguisher (mounted to the side of my center console) and the passengers seat doesn't slide forward into it.

This looks like a good solution. Looks high enough not to get in the way.

Mike would have something like this. But would end up modifying it.

I stole the pvc pipe idea but used a 4 in by 3 in reducer with a 4 in cap in the bottom, then put some industrial Velcro on the bottom of the cap. 5 bucks to buy, 5 mins to make and it works awesome.

I highly recommend it at least as an interim solution.

I think it's a winner.

I am sorry that I do not have a picture with me as I am at the airport in China but a double flip out drink holder from the 2010 Boxster (My year so it my be on a lot of years) looks like it would fit under the radio. It works great and when you are done it just pushes back in its spot. It is adjustable for different size drinks.

One roll of duct-tape resting on the floor, find a coffee cup that fits in the center of it. $5 dollars to find a cup that fits center hole and always nice to have a roll of tape in the car. WIN/WIN

Tape won't slide around on its side.

Check out the BMW cup holder which fits over the center console edge:

This scenario brings back memories of a time that I left a roll of duct tape in the trunk of my 1978 Ford Granada during a summer many many moons ago. It was quite stable as the adhesive had oozed due to the Chicagoland Sun and heat. I think that I had to cut it from the mat. headbang.gif

If I had to guess the Granada got up to 140 degrees F.

I wonder how stable it is.

Here is a pick of it.

this is an american issue. No one in Europe will need a cup holder. You need more twisted roads... wink.gif

Best drink holder..

I decided to go with the fold down style on the side of my center console and sacrifice passenger footroom. I relocated the fire extinguisher to the front right long to accomodate.

I guess I will put on hold my plans to fabricate an armrest for now as I would like deeper seats for better support for possible auto x-ing etc.
