Does anybody make an indash radio that doesn't look like a Japanese video game? I've seen the Retrosound units, but would like to find something to replace an old cassette player in my car. I really dislike the flashing, video displays that most radios have these days, and it seems that Blaupunkt isn't selling car stereos in the USA anymore.

Any suggestions? I really want to get something that I can plug my iPhone or other music device into, but do want to still have a functioning radio.

Try Moss Motors on the web. They have a unit fot the MG's Simple yet solid. Gordon

I know you said you want a functioning radio, so this may not be for you, but it`s what I plan to put in my bug because I want a period radio (I don't care if the radio works).
I'll use a proper amp and speakers (with a sub).

You can take a vintage radio and add an auxiliary audio input module for classic car radios.

I used D & M Restoration to recondition a vintage radio for my teener. I did not add the auxiliary input option because I would rather hear my Bursch muffer.

Here is the recondition radio in my dash.

I have another radio just like the one in picture in a box in case someone is interested.

Get one of the period correct Blau Frankfurts with the 7pin DIN plug on the back.

iPod adapters are available or can be made:

Go for used late 90s Blaupunkt. I have been buying up the cheap CM147 tape decks that pop up on the bay. These have a clean look, an Aux output, a remote control, and decent sound. Though best of all, no one will rip off a damn tape deck.

George, try these guys based in Costa Mesa CA & they're usually at the big March Porsche swap meet/sale....

They offer 2 ways to go - either the adapter for I-phone/3.5mm Aux. for your vintage radio, or the vintage look modern radios for 70's Porsches.

PS - more info for their bricks-n-mortor store...

Back when I had a 914, I put in a Porsche CDR-220, looked and sounded great.

The CDR 220 works pretty good; it can run an Ipod in the auxiliary mode. A CDR 210 does NOT have an auxiliary mode.....

I've got a Left Coast, Simple Stereo in my 914. Just leave the tape deck as a decoy to deter thieves and install one of these under the dash and have the plug on the center console or arm rest. You can play music and charge your device via the built-in USB (any USB compatible device can be charged via the Simple Stereo). Most iPods and such, have FM receivers too, so you can still listen to the radio.

American made and designed right here in beautiful Anacortes, WA. flag.gif

I have the all black Retrosound which has the perfect euro look. It does have a simple display, but not a disco light show like all the current big name stuff. Comes standard with remote iPod and memory stick socket. I like it.

Last year i put in an alpine Cde-133BT deck in my 76 turbo for the same reason. IMO the alpine had the least of the flashing ricer look. Both the USB and bluetooth work well with my iPhone (and iPad). The PO had already cut the dash to fit an early 2000 alpine unit, so no damage by me.

The biggest reason I went with the alpine is for the ktp-445 inline amp. I was looking to drive my speakers a little more than the 18 watts the deck put out. The ktp fits in behind the unit and uses the harnes ends to plug and play, no addtl wiring needed, no ugly amp panel in the trunk.

Been working well since.

Good luck!

The radio has been sold.
