My previous firewall bushing looked fine. Appeared new, no wobbles or hang-ups, so it was at the bottom of my investigation list. However, once the bushing was removed it was obviously not installed properly and warn in a bad way.

I just replace the firewall bushing with:

Highly recommended! What a major improvement!
Still have trouble with 1st gear one out of ten stops - but it's much better - I'm happy.

Well, I was for a day. Engine appears to be leaking oil from a cylinder gasket now ... so the car is back on jacks.

The bearing is great. It was the best thing I've put on my car in a long time.

Because of this thread, I have been looking at Chris' shifting kit including the rods, the transaxle shifter, etal. I am impressed. I think next year after the car is painted I will be buying his entire system. I am also thinking of placing a hydraulic clutch on the car. Definitely food for thought!!!

A PO hacked up the firewall on my '75 and riveted a section of early firewall in there ... then stuck a tail shit transaxle in it

I removed the mess and installed one of Chris' nifty firewall bearings as well.

We had to take it back out and modify the outer diameter at the back side a little to allow for full shift rod travel (in lieu of moving the entire drive train 10mm rearward) and it works great
