I have a muffler with a lot of surface rust. What is the best way to prep for spray and what spray paint is recommended? I have used the high temps at the local flaps and they always stayt to peel off after a while.

I really like ceramic coating muffler/exhaust systems. It's not as cheap as spray paint, but it actually works and lasts for years and years.

My local powder coater offers it in a semi shiny silver and black. The last time I had a Bursch system coated it cost around $200. Still looks new 2 years later. . . You get what you pay for.

I have had good luck with the stuff from the auto parts store, you just need to prep it correctly and heat cycle it like the can said. I have used it on a 2 stroke bike and my bug muffler.

Here's where I think you get way more than you pay for:

1. Take it to a local sandblaster to clean everything up.
2. Use either "POR-15 Exhaust Manifold Grey" or "VHT 104 Grey Exhaust Paint"
3. Follow the instructions for curing.

I've used both and they both have/had held up perfectly for over 5 years. The POR-15 product is more expensive. I've been using the VHT lately with excellent results. I can shoot some pics today as I'm getting ready to put the exhaust system on the GT project this week.

Only problem with VHT is it sometimes will not like to be touched up. The paint will curl and alligator when resprayed later.

I have also used BBQ black with good results. It will take a respray without fuching up the old finish.

I have used the Techline 'Titanium', a ceramic coating. Its good stuff, durable and a ceramic coating you can apply yourself or have a shop do it. Color looks factory stock.
