If the line kinks from bending, it will effect the fuel flow... That's why they have elbows.

You can use fuel line. But you'll need to leave them longer so they don't kink.

FWIW I've run fuel line on a 1.7 for 35 years. I change the lines about every for years, and as Cary said above, I leave them a little long so they won't kink. You have to pull them back when you drop the engine.

If you consider they'll probably last at least 10 years, why not get the real deal?

7mm ID or 5/16ths line work well. I though you could also go super short on them, so there is only a fraction amount of hose between the injector and rail. Might be worth testing. It will drop the rails down abit lower. With the longer lines, I didn't like the way it was butted up under the MPS. Alot of guys are using the R009 rated fuel line now to combat the ethenol gas.
BMW also has rubber elbows that are much cheaper than the OEM ones. They are probally 8mm ID. Should be a thread somewhere on it.

Another "point to ponder" is, Can you get the new elbows in the newer "Flex Fuel" grade for Ethanol mix fuel ??????? If not you may have to skip the preformed elbows.

Biggest problem I see is in dropping the engine. Without the elbows, they will get hung up in the engine shelf. You have to be extra careful when dropping the engine.

mps side can not be long

I cut a short length of hose, zip tie tight thru the hose and around a 1 1/2" dowel or pipe, and use a heat gun to soften it slightly. When it cools, the bend stays.

I don't cook it, just warm enough to make it unpleasant it to touch.

I popped for the OE bent ones. Not cheap but heck it gasoline going through there in a hot engine room.
