I have some pictures of my radio, which certainly appears original to the car, and I have a couple of questions.

First some front shots: (Note the black button on the side on the station select buttons, it pushes in and out, anyone know what it does??) I have not seen any other pictures of a radio with the "Porsche" AM/FM slide select (what have I got here?).

Here's some pics of the tags, what a bitch to get these pictures. In searching this site and google I've found some links to the FTZ-Nr. U108 number, but none look like this radio.

It has two DIN jacks in the back, both have 'tethered' plastic covers. (I'll try and get clearer pics, but the blood was rushing to my head..) One cover has two 'pins' in it, and the other has 4 'pins' in it, the pins appear to be aluminum, but not really sure:

I dig it! I've been thinking one of those or another period correct radio will go into whitey.

I'd suspect your button to be one of two things:
1. stereo/mono or local/distant switch or
2. memory button for the mechanical presets

Mono/Stereo button. Very common for this era of radios.

awesome, thanks guys, I see the red stereo light illuminate when the station is tuned just right.

Does anyone know if the Right round dial (the tuning dial) is suppossed to have a balance left and right? The Left Volume dial has the other 'back dial' that adjusts bass/treble, but I don't see that I can adjust balance.

Pull the knob off and see if it is a dual rheostat.

Here's a somewhat similar unit I found for VW, you can see it only has a dual on the driver side.

I found a picture of an old blaupunkt with a hole on the side labeled "Balance" does your old one have something like that?

Great pictures! Hard to get.

From the lettering style on the clear dial this looks like a later model radio maybe ~1975 or so than would be original to a 1973 car, installed behind a 1973-correct dash cover plate. The PORSCHE lettering on the center selector bar switch is not unusual. I have a small gallery of 914 radio photos on this webpage, dated correctly to the best of my knowledge. I couldn't find a balance area or a potentiometer anywhere that might do it.

Jeff, thanks thats a great resource, I have been crawling all over your site, and missed the radios. Seems like mine should say Blaupunkt on the front, but its seems to have sagged a little, I'll probably try and take it out later and check it out more completely.

I pulled the knobs and moved the 'bass/treble' adjuster to the other side, there definitely seems to be some adjustment there, but very stiff, what is strange is I think it is the AM/FM adjustment, because when I start to turn it, the green 'FM' behind the number 10 on the clear tuning glass starts to move. Like its going to roll over or slide over, but then the knob gives out and doesn't hold.

I'm pretty sure this is going to switch from FM to AM, and the slide with the Porsche lettering is stuck hard and won't move in either direction (if its even suppossed to.)

So this was bugging me a little, and I was looking at ordering a "din to 3.5mm" connector, so I took the radio out, to make sure what I have.... You can see in the pic above that the radio seems to 'sag' a little in the faceplate, and it seems its some non-correct hard plastic faceplate with some cobbed cutouts.

So after taking it out, you can see a little better the faceplate doesn't seem to be original to the radio. It doesn't have vinyl on it, its molded plastic to resemble the rest of the dash vinyl.

When looking at the back of the faceplate, you can see that the "Porsche" slider doesn't slide, just glued in place, and the general cob job of the installation:

I have a 6pin and an 8pin?? I believe the 6pin is a mono connection, but I thought the 7pin was stereo, and I've never heard of an 8pin...

So I actually do have a couple of questions (not just being a post whore..)

I want to put in the correct faceplate with the correct fabric applied. I think in looking at AA that this would be the correct option:

Another question is the screw type of adjustment in the face of the radio. I'm still looking for the balance adjustment of this radio, and I suspect this may be it...but not sure:

Another question is the fact that I have dual reostat's on both sides, the left(driver) side is the bass/treble adjustment and has the second adjustment knob:

The right(passenger) side has one as well, but I don't have the second knob here, and it appears this is the AM/FM switch, as I see the green FM indicator behind the number 10 on the glass face start to move when I turn this. Its very stiff, and I don't want to force it:

There is a guy on eBay that sells knobs for your Blaupunkt. He has all sizes. He also sells faceplates.

BTW, I found this place has the 2Din style speaker connectors, for a buck, but they have a $5 handling charge unless you buy more than $5 bucks worth of stuff.

I'm thinking of buying a few sets of the connectors to have them handy.

The connectors on the back are used to connect the tuner part of the radio to the amplifier section. You can make up a connector to allow you to add a MP3 player or iPod to the radio. Someone had posted the pin connections somewhere.

This is what's confusing me, everyone talks about a 6 or 7 pin DIN, but it looks like I have a 6 and 8 pin. Or is what I think is the 8 pin really a 7 pin, and you don't worry about the middle pin??

My setero Frankfurt has the two DIN connections. My 7-pin one does not have a center pin. But, I think yours will be just fine because your other pins look correct. I would just make the 7-pin connector and enjoy!

Reviving this old thread to report that the link still works! Not that my mono Frankfurt US uses those for the single speaker. Not only that, but they have the 6-pin DIN plugs as well.

I also note that I found a pin on my 6-pin that goes to 12V when the radio is switched on, it's pin 4 in the diagram above. That will run my power antenna relay when I get this finished.

I noticed that when I removed the socket cover the audio quit. The cover has a short between two pins that must be connected to get sound. I assume one pin is an output from the radio, and the other is the input to the amplifier.

I'm thinking of running separate wires out to a 3.5mm socket so I can use the switch in the jack to connect the audio to the amplifier and at the same time disconnect the radio from it, BUT, the antenna will need to be switched off as well, so maybe a dual pole switch is better. It will have to be double throw too, so I can have it turn the antenna ON while it turns the external audio OFF (and Radio ON) at the same time.

The pins of my 6-pin socket are:

Pin 1 Audio OUT
Pin 2 Audio IN
Pin 4 +12V switched
Pin 5 Ground

Same radio as mine, someone said it is for 75-76 years, my car is 74 so I'm off one year. Far left is am/fm knob, mine does not have the slide buttons yours does. Left round knob has a treble/base adjustment in back or it.
