when the car idles, there is a clanking noise coming from the front of the engine. At high rpm the noise is gone and the engine is running great. When I put an electrical load on the alternator during idle, like put the lights on, the noise goes away. The alternator is brand new. Is it a fan belt issue?

I'm fighting this same issue with my car. It is the alternator, actually it's the belt not being tight enough.

Check that your bottom mount bolt bracket has not cracked and is now broken. I've seen this a few times lately on 914s here at the shop.

is the fan tight to the shaft? also, check the fan to be sure there is nothing inside the squirrel cage.

well it was the pulley on the alternator shaft that was loose. All better now...thanks for the help.
