I need to modify my 911 oil cooler for my 914-6 conversion. Tell me your experience of removal while cooler was still in your 914. I don't want to take out the engine. sawzall-smiley.gif sawzall-smiley.gif

mack914,

I've not taken the oil cooler out of my 914/6, but I have removed the alternator, and cleaned out the oil cooler (brake cleaner) while I was at it. I posted a jillion pics on a thread somewhere -- search on /6 and alternator and hopefully it will turn up. (I'll look after I post this..)

Anyway, iirc, the removal of the oil cooler would have been the next step. Since the cleaning step worked pretty well, I didn't move to the removal step.

Why do you have to remove your cooler?

[edit: somehow, the original didn't work out. Now it's the raw http addr]

If you have a stock 914-6 or early 911 fan shroud it's more involved than if you've got a later engine. The later engines were made so you didn't have to remove the fan shroud, in that the rear section of duct to the oil cooler is removable (two piece), but the early or 914-6 (the gray raised part in the photos in the link below) is one piece instead of two.
