Is that the car you got out there from Glenn and D&G? Are you still planning to go back to the Aubergine? It would be so cool.

I wonder if there was something special about Aubergine and 1972. My Aubergine car is a 72 as well.

Oh yeah baby!!! Ditch that yellow. Eggplant is faster!!!
Mine is a '74 and I believe came from the dealer as such. It has the optional color code on the stamp and everywhere on the car is that beautiful aubergine. Dig it! dig it! dig it!

That front bar is exactly like the one onmy 70 project. "cheesy" no rear bar for me. The P.O. yesterday was tellin me the one day he did drive it thecar handled really well.
"Hmm cool" I said wonder what it will do with real bars.
Oh I know awesome.

I dont recall seeing a front bar in any of his pictures, just a rear bar that looks a little different from the stock one. I would be interested to see that bar up close.

I need that kind of sway bar for my car. I have a large fuel pump and accumulator in the path of the stock bar under the gas tank. Anyone know where I can get one?

Coupla things,
First, what is the paint code for aubergine? I 've looked at the Porsche colors at a number of paint sites and have never been able to find it.
I might paint my car that color if I can find it!
Second, is it metallic or solid color?

Rick, the 911 used a sway bar like that and from what I understand, it can be used on a 914 also.

Cool! I'm checkin the 911 BBS's.
kwales, Did someone remove the metal tag with the paint code from the drivers door jamb? Look between the hinges.

Rick,
I think I have one of those under my builder car. It's a heck of a lot larger diameter than the stock one under my 2.0 parts car. I'll look today to see if it looks like the pic but it does attach to the rear wheels with brackets and doesn't use the ball in socket factory design.
PO ran it without a front bar.
I wasn't sure what to do with it as large rear bars don't seem to be the handling thing for a 4 cylinder.
Then again, a large rear bar might be just the thing for a large mass 928 engine.

Yep, 74 and later (through 89) 911s came with a swaybar like that
The later the bigger (22mm for the 3.2 carrera's - of the top of my head)
It shouldn't be mounted like shown here though... It mounts to the x-member
Also the tabs on the a-arms are different
(a-arm on the right has the "under body" swaybar tabs)

Thanks for the picture. I was very curious about the control arm attachment method.

Oct 31 2004, 10:21 AM
There's a big rubber bushing in the tab and the bar "slides" into it form the side
It's a bitch to install on the a-arms
If memory serves me right, the 2 tabs under the body mount on the same bolts as where the x-member tabs mount to the body (footwells)
Unless you have 74 or later a-arms, you'll need to get some
All said... If I were you, I'd just move the fuelpump and use a through body bar (preferably an adjustable one)

If you look closely at the pictures the bars are mounted out in front of the arms (toward the front of the car). The 911 factory bars mount toward the rear of the car and on to the cross bar rear supports!
These are Addco bars!!!!!!!!
Addco's web siteLink to their Porsche page which has both the front and the rear bars listed.
Porsche sway bar listingNever used them on a 914, I have used the for tow vehicles before thou, they are just okay in my book.
Sorry to burst bubbles out there.
They 911 bar will work for the Allien, but you need to swap out ot a 911 front end, these addco's might be worth a shot. BTW, they are sold in J.C. Whitney catalogs also.

The paint code for Aubergine on a 914 is 98 which is the custom color code. In other words, there isn't a 914 paint code for Aubergine. Looking on the Glasurit site shows Aubergine was available on 911s from 72-75 and shows the paint code as either 025 or G6. I don't know if that's a Porsche code, or what.

The idea of bolting something that is heavily loaded like a swaybar to the flimsy floor of the front trunk seems kinda disturbing to me...

I was thinking the same thing......I have a stock bar stashed someplace. I may have to see if there's room under the tank.

Well the bar attaches to only where the a-arm attaches, not to the trunk floor. This is assuming that it mounts like the 911 bar. Here is a pic of the 911 front suspension on my car before the install. The front end is closer to the house.
Jeroen
Nov 3 2004, 08:11 AM
A bar is always mounted to the body somewhere, otherwise it would just be hanging there and do nothing
On the later 911 setup (see pics above) it is mounted to the tabs on the xmember
Rick,
I don't see why a stock bar wouldn't fit under your tank (other than you having put the fuel pump there). That's the way it was designed to fit
