Lisa...thanks. I do all the work myself except for the painting (done by a local guy who specializes in corvette restorations). Don't golf so this is my personal time habit! The 914 sat in a southern calif desert for the last 6 years, the paint, all rubber and the entire interior were shot and so dry you just touched things and it cracked off (but the body was very solid). The 911 was an Indiana car (2nd owner) and was originally brown with a really worn brown interior (it was a narrow body also..wide body is all factory porsche parts). This one was just driven and driven and never cared for. The 928 was owned by a guy for 10 years that knew nothing about porsches (it was in the best shape of the 3) and he let this car just sit. It had alot of electrical issues when I got it and just plain weather worn.

Jim,
Very nice set of p-cars! I particularly like the 928 -- and you've motivated me to wash cars today. Just about to head out and "do it". If there's still light, I'll shoot the requisite pics -- though it won't be anywhere near as artistic!

Kim...go wash and post some pics! And on the 928...it is scary fast...it's so smooth a ride that unknowingly you are way way way beyond legal speed limits.

Wow, those are gorgeous cars. Any time you need help stretching their legs, ya know, if you think one of them is getting ignored or something, give me a call, you've got my number. I'll drive right up there.
In fact, a little ride in that 928 might actually make my wife a fan of Porsche...

Jim:
Nice cars and nice shots!
I'd love to add a 928 to my "collection" too as the prices seem to be fairly low; any recommendations as to best years, any problem areas etc? I've read Bruce Anderson's comments in Excellence about the 928's but would like to get an actual owner's feedback. Thanks!

Tom,
There really are no "problem years" 928's. These cars were all over-engineered and built for long cruising. With simple maintenance these are all 300k mile cars. But here are some of the differences:
early cars (pre-"S" models) are the slowest and were outfitted with only 3 speed tranny's (the automatics)
"S" cars got a HP boost and were outfitted with 4sp auto's
These "16V" engines are non-interference, so if the timing belts break you are ok (except for those with euro engines..they are interference)
In the 86.5 model year, these cars got outfitted with engines and brakes that were to be introduced in the 87 model years (bumper upgrades externally). These are 32v engines and are interfence engines
87's on all look the same (last few years I believe they flared out the rear fenders) and just received more and more HP. In 89 they went to even more electronics in the dash.
95 was the last year and they were retailing for about 150k!
When looking for a 928 you should always get a PPI. A neglected 928 will cost alot to bring up to speed. A well maintained but used 928 will be the car to go for. Don't be concerned with cars with 100 to 150k miles..it is nothing on these engines. But ask these questions:
1. when was the timing belt changed
2. was the water pump changed at the same time
3. original torque tube? (a loud whine most likely are torque tube bearings...easily rebuilt)
In all, 928's run alot better if they are run often. So look for a car that has not spent most of it's time sitting around. Once you find one that is a great driver, you'll be hooked!

Guys,
Thx for the comments! Pcars are Pcars -- always something interesting contained!
Tom: Eichlers are a cult all their own -- easily equal to the 914 cult. Funny how al this works.... We are restoring ours to original -- sort of a CW thing... nowI live in 1960..... heh.
Jim: P-cars should be silver. Of course.

Jim, do you belong to the local porsche club? I belonged way back in the early '90's. It was a great club. Do you know who is in charge now. I would like to join up with the South Bend group. I am from Ft. Wayne and I would usually join the Indy group but I liked the South Bend group better.

Buck,
I'm not a member of the PCA club..been too busy restoring! Anyway, I did go to a PCA autocross this year (at the tirerack) and an SCCA autocross (at the tire rack) this year. Seems like there is more members/activity in the local SCCA club..but more porsche owners in the PCA club. Here is the url's for both the PCA and SCCA michiana regions...
http://min.pca.org/http://www.sbrscca.org/Seems like both clubs use the Tirerack track alot (it's on the west side of south bend...just off the toll road).

Jim,
it was great meeting you at the FFC in Indiana.
Your cars look awesome. Your 914 was one of the best looking at the FFC. Your attention to detail with your restorations is amazing. (Like using a silver Porsche crest on a silver car!)

Nice cars, nice photos, nice thread. Even a mention of Eichler homes!
I have been too busy with house chores (the dreaded honey-do list) to wash my 914 lately, but it is only dusty. After seeing all of these beautiful photos I need to get a wash high on next weekends list!

Love the wheels on the '14. What size are they? And from what car? What size tires do you run? And do you have any issues with fender contact?
Thanks for tolerating the questions.

Dave,
The rims are 16" from a boxster and I'm running 205/50/16's all the way around. clearance isn't a problem with mine..but each 914 is different. I've got 6" and 7" widths. The 7" rims are perfect (front and rear)...the 6" need a small spacer as their offset is about 10mm out from the 7" rims. Since I haven't gotten longer wheel studs yet to put the 6" rims in the front..they are currently on the back with the 7" rims on the front (I've been told since I'm running the same tire size this isn't an issue...but I'm going to switch them soon enough when I get longer studs for the front or I come across another pair of 7" rims).

Jim, isn't it cool to place your 914 next to the 911 and look at the difference between the wheel base of the two cars.
jim912928
Nov 2 2004, 03:04 PM
buck...sure is. It is also amazing at how much lower the 914 stands. Now if I can just find a good cheap 3.0l SC engine to cram in my 914! (keyword there is cheap!!!!)
