Wow, it's been a LONG time since I've posted to the World, but I'm about finished with Grad school so the car I've been waiting to work on for 2 years is finally getting some attention...
I'm putting together a parts list for some maintenance items to get it back on the road and it's been too long that i can't remember what this cable is (im about 99% sure it's the speedo cable). It looks like it got hot and started to unravel itself. It's the "bulb" looking part of the lower cable hanging down.'
Can you guys confirm?
Thanks!

If it goes to the back of the transmission It's the speedo.

If the speedometer cable got hot, it could be the transmission ground is bad and it's grounding through the cable, check the ground cable on the top rear of the transmission.....or it hit the exhaust.
Hope this helps
