It's finally time.

Custom gear set~ C-F-M-S-X.

Last time I drove it, it locked up and dragged the left wheel 100 yards.
Took forward and backward rocking back and forth to get it in to second so I could limp it 1/2 mile home.

Should interesting to see what's inside.

This car:

This trans has seen upwards of 100 a/x's and 75 track days, plus some street driving.

Currently powered by a 2.6 Porsche SIX.

Hi Trekk. We know your car, we are you old buddies, remember?
Glad to see you back here. Can't wait to see what's inside and what you do. beerchug.gif
brant
you might want to consider some lower gears...
S, X are really high for a track car on anything but the longest tracks
and I thought you would use it for autox too....

Would a V gear work for you?
Trekkor
"V" might be to low for Thunderhill and Willow Springs if I ever get back down there.

I got the trans out today,

Dude... Where've ya been?

I have an M / S box with a stock 5th gear. Plenty fun at Thunderhill... evilgrin.gif

ood to hear from you TK.

I throw out my guess -- busted pinion. biggrin.gif

Looking forward to pics.
Trekkor
Nice to be back.

I look forward to seeing some old faces and making some new friends!
I'll have some pics up and will start some interesting new project topics.

Fiber glass flare install, alternate brake calipers, 13" wheels, roll cage, MBZ master cylinder, Formula Vee build, etc.

KT
Trekkor
Next I will clean the outside of the gearbox and start the disassembly process.

pics coming...

I believe I have a couple of good cores here, gimme a call if you need one.

My long gear box is AFNSY - good for Miller Motorsports and Fontana.
Short gear box is AFMSX - good for Willow Springs, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Laguna Seca and Thunderhill and Buttonwillow.
My rear tires are 275/45/16 and have a diameter of 25.6" for apples to apples comparison.

For what it's worth, I don't change out the GB track to track - too lazy. I run the long box and keep the short box on the trailer as a spare.

A GA M Q V would be great for Sears, but not thunder hill. I'm using that configuration for Portland (with chicane) and for ORP.

I have a stock box for portland without chicane... wink.gif (2.7 RS spec)

In-car from Sears.
MSX box~

No shortage of gears!

5th gear into T10!

KT
brant
But Trekkor... did you ever redline in 5th gear in the video?

if not going lower will make you faster

It really all dependent on redline and as steve said tire size.
8,000rpm is a whole lot different than 6500rpm when it comes to gearing.
Worlds apart really and hard to compare different cars unless you know that variable.
Trekkor
7300, here.

205/50/15 in the posted videos.

I use this chart. It is from an Excel file and will change the mph figures when you put in a different tire diameter.

and here is a link to a thread with a chart and more good info:

Trekkor
I've never redlined 5th before. ( 132 mph )
I do pull hard in 5th to the braking zone.

Repost - guess you can't do PDF's on here.

My 'long time' gear chart.

22.5 is the height for a 205/50/15 or my new 11" wide Goodyear radial slicks.

KT
brant
but if your running 7300 rpm isn't that still approximately 130mph?

Yes.

I'm always under redline in 5th.
If I can push myself for faster exit speeds out of 4th, I should be perfect at all the tracks I drive.

KT
Rand
OMG I want some tile.
Trekkor
Got it pretty clean.

With it in any gear, it will not turn a full rotation.
In neutral it freewheels.

I ran out of time today to get it opened up.

KT
Dr Evil
Busted gear jamming it up. Not the pinion.
Trekkor
I hope it's not my 1st gear.

Before the trans seized up, it was getting harder and harder to shift in and out of 3rd. Even worse when hot.

Running Swepco 210.

What gear oil can I run?

KT
Trekkor
Why are trans parts so expensive?!?

I have two complete spare gearboxes in my shed for possible parts and two complete gasket/seal kits.

KT
brant
you're going to need a trans cooler......

lower gears are still faster.
if you can gear for 125, and use it.... it is still faster than gearing for 130....

you will be surprised what a temp gauge shows... time for a trans cooler.

time for redline shock proof light.
Dr Evil
Mmm, tranz cooler.
Cap'n Krusty
Oh, how we could run with "cooler", external plumbing", and "tranny" in our vocabulary.

The Cap'n
Trekkor
I would like to plumb a 12v pump from the drain, to a remote cooler and then back into the vent. That would be nice.

What gear oil is recommended and the max temp one should see?

KT
Trekkor
3rd gear is obliterated!!

I think I'd run the return into the fill plug. You need a vent, IMO.

The Cap'n
brant
trekkor,

rather than just putting the oil back into the case
why not do it right and allow it to enter the case where it also lubricates things...

this is why the pro's put it back in to the case over the diff, etc to allow it to run over the moving parts on its gravity fed trip back to the "sump" of the case...

2 returns would be the norm

look in my build thread for more pictures.

Ouch WTF.gif
Trekkor
Ouch is right! look at this:

IPB Image

I hauled it over to Mark's shop.
He had it broken down in about 10 minutes with me running my mouth the whole time...

Going back with a flipped ZD 5th gear which becomes a KA 3rd.
It we be even better for A/X and should still be great for the track.
I'm using Solex cams, which come on lower in the rpm band than the peaky "S" cams I was running in the old motor.

KT
Dr Evil
HA, Called it.

The return line should go over the gear stack, not the diff. The diff is large, and not as delicate. The gears are separated from the diff compartment by a virtual wall. There are passages, but inadequate ones. You can plumb it to spray both stack and diff, though.

You da man!

We're going to pick the best parts from my two spare transmissions.

Looking for better dogteeth for 1st and 2nd-3rd.
Hoping to have it all buttoned up tomorrow and back in the car before the weekend.

trying to bring to my a/x school/test day next weekend.

Cooling mods will have to wait.

Spray it on the back side of the gears though.

WTF are you talking about? The gears back sides point both fore and aft in the box.

I'd love to see some pictures of gear box cooling mods.
Anybody got some?
