The seller says it has only had 2 owners and can document the 56K miles. What do you experienced guys think of this car? Having owned a 2.0L and a 6 will I be disappointed with the 1.7L ?

Please be critical. No underside photos but seller is sending me them ... he promises its is as good as topside. We''ll see
Thanks

Looks good, but wait for the pics of underside and other critical areas.
You don't need more horsepower ?

The best way to fnd a good car is..... look at all the build and restauration threads,
if one of those cars is available, take it and you know what you have.

Many guys here do a really good job and spend a lot of time and $ to bring their
baby in a good condition. As a potential buyer you know then wat's under the fresh
paintwork and you can be sure to have a well done car.

IMO -- that's a very strong asking price -- I would expect concours at that price for a 1.7. It is very nice looking though, the paint and chrome bumpers look to be in good shape. A few things off the top of my head:
  • Monza exhaust...not original
  • hood badge...not original and in a weird spot
  • Missing the front bumperettes
  • No center console or alloy wheels, which I think means this was a no-options car, so doesn't have sway bars.

Assuming the engine is solid...

If you did get into this car at this price or something similar, I would want to confirm there is (close to) no rust anywhere by removing the rockers, closely inspecting the trunks, battery tray area, etc. I'd also want to do a very extensive inspection of the suspension -- how are the ball joints, a arm bushings, shocks, (not suspension, but) tie rods -- and I'd want to shift through every gear to assess health of the synchros.

Freshening the synchros and suspension can eat up $5k easily, then you've got a $20k car.

looks like a beaut though. I am pretty sure if you can afford the $$ and take the leap you won't regret it.

Didn't we have a thread on this car the other day? I thought there were some red flags from that dealer already expressed, and the trunk badge mounted so high.

what happened to that thread?

I'd say that depends on what you wish from the car. If you're looking to whip contemporaries - nope, not going to happen. If you want to enjoy a vintage Porsche, at a small price, - yes. Even the lowly 1.7 will give you performance & enjoyment. I've had mine for 40 years & never regretted it. Did some pretty successful auto-xing with it too.

Tough as nails & just as reliable.
