Sorry, this is driving me nuts. I need a popup blocker. I am in using cable modem Time Warner here in the desert.
I hooked up the computer last nite and it was overloaded with spyware crap. I got that all off I still get popups randomly.

Try the ad-aware from lavasoft and spysweeper. Spysweeper is better over the two, but the freeware only allows you one update.

Thanks guys I used the ad-aware for the excess spyware load. I will try the panicware for the popups.

Forget about microsoft browsers and get Mozilla 1.7.3 not firefox.
Built in pop up blocker, complete cookie, image mgt.
Free.
Get rid of all the spyware first. spybot or pest patrol, norton or mcaffee then download the browser.
I occasionally run into websites that do not support mozilla and they are getting fewer and fewer. Usually universities and college sites.

use a combination of adsgone and stopzilla...

Here is my 2 cents. Anti-spyware i use is spy-bot search and destroy. and I downoaded the google toolbar that has a pop up blocker. It works excellent. All my roomates have it. Windows SP2 on xp sucks in my opinion. I had less pop ups and fewer problems before. I had the spybot and the google toolbar before I upgraded.

Norton Internet security works very well. I haven't been hit by pop-ups or crappy spyware since I installed it.

i like what mickeysoft did to XP's Internet Explorer in Service Pack 2.

Here's the thing I noticed with these spyware removers.
There isn't one product out there that removes all the spyware. I have three installed. They all have different features. But overall, the Spysweeper seems to be the best I tried.

I dont use any of that stuff. I usually reload my computer about every 6 months or so just to clear off junk and load new software. I am running XP with SP1 and Mozilla Firefox the latest virgin. I loaded this current setup around January and have not done anything to it since. I get 0 popups. I do not have any spyware programs loaded and no internet security software. I run Norton AV corporate edition from my server. I go to clients offices all the time to clean up their computers from all the crap they down load and install. Some of the worst ones I have seen are stuff like Win Tools, My Search, Tool bar add ons and stuff like that. That Win Tools program is almost impossible to get off your computer. If you delete it from the registry, it rewrites itself right away. Do a refresh and its right there again. I dont usually tell my clients how mine is set up, that could work me right out of a job.

download and install the google toolbar - automatic popup blocking and you can do google searches from the toolbar.

or get a mac with safari, it has native popup blocking.

Google toolbar works great in IE.

Otherwise get firefox.

I tried a lot of pop-up blockers. The only one that really did the job was Stopzilla. Not free like some of the others, but worth it.

BTW....regarding the WinTools crap, I think the reason its not letting you delete it out of the registry is because certain folders in the registry are automatically protected from deletion. This was the case with a similar item I tackled a few months ago. It wasn't re-writing to the registry, it simply wasn't deleting the item from the registry in the first place, though it never gave me an error message or anything to let me know that. Tricksy hobbitsesss...

It seems the OS protects certain folders with particular names. As far as I've seen, there's no way to just change this protection setting. Generally, you can rename the folder, delete the entry, rename the folder back and then you can attack the previously untouchable dll's that the system wouldn't let you kill before that were running the search bars/backdoors/whatever and such.

This took me about 4 hours of major headache to finally work out a few months ago when my brother brought me his computer from school to fix. Lavasoft's Ad-Aware found over 700 offending items. Then I ran Spybot and it found another 80 items. Plus two trojan viruses. Dumbass was on a college campus broadband connection with only XP's firewall. No secondary firewall or pop-up blocking.

I only started using it very recently, but I've been very impressed with Spysweeper.

I have both Ad -A-Ware and Spybot on my laptop and was still getting hammered with popups. I downloaded the Google toolbar and have had no problems since. And it's FREE!

Our home computer was getting a lot of crap on it. I purchased Spy Sweeper (Webroot) and as long as it stays loaded it works pretty well. (For some reason my wife or one of my daughters kill it and then the crap starts loading up.) I keep the definitions and program updated and run automated daily sweeps.

Has anyone used HijackThis to find really, really clandestine stuff?

Hijack this was developed in relation to CWshredder. (CoolWebsearch is a hijacker and Hijack this is the cleaner.) Hijack this shows you what is in your system and you research the stuff that looks spyish and you mark it for deletion. Hijack this is a great program., You need to know what you are deleting though.

Well I have to say thanks to you guys for all of the help.
Funny thing in the Tech section of the Desert Sun today were three articles devoted to exactly this subject, spyware,popups,etc.
Okay I have Adaware, ran that a few times,tried loading the free popup blocker, took forever.
I have decided since I am not going to change over to XP, I loaded the Google toolbar. With this and Adaware. I should be good to go for awhile.
