To bring you up to speed. This will be my fifth 914 project. Last one was the beautiful Oly Blue that sold for over $20k.
This is a 1971 Willow Green 1.7 with approx 50k miles. Purchased from another board member just a couple of weeks ago, I will be going through it and evaluating the project list over the holiday week.
The goal is to get her done by end of Feb.

So. Here we go. Here is what she looks like now.

First step today will be to put these rivieras and kumhos on for temporary use while the OE chrome steelies are checked out.

Good thorough cleaning today reveals all components in good to excellent condition but unfortunately heavy undercoating.

Finished for today by cleaning inside all 4 wheel wells, behind rockers and mount the temporary rivs and Kumho tires. Tomorrow will be interior cleaning and evaluating.

Thanks for the pics! Undercoating is thick but hopefuly kept the underside solid.
Looking forward to seeing the interior...

Interior is not too bad. Two cracks in dash pad, will need correct radio, and a few odds and ends, will pull seats, backpad and carpet out tomorrow.

Looks like a nice car to start with. Always liked that green - its a nice contrast to the black.

The Riverias look great on it!

I know they're just temporary, and the car has nice orig gear, but Rivs have such a nice period look.

Nice! That undercoat doesn't look all that heavy to me. And it cleaned up nicely. Tell me your driving that car through this process. driving.gif

Oh yeah. Cant resist taking it out for a run now and then. Once the interior is pulled apart, I cant, so maybe thats why I am dragging my feet.

Great Color and condition.

Removed trim and front bumper for thorough cleaning and sheet metal evaluation. After a good cleaning, you can see there is no evidence of repairs or rust. This is a typical area to find nasty repair work or rusty sheet metal.

Any ideas how to remove old old undercoating?

I'm sure there are better methods, but Mineral spirits work. I recall George H. telling me a high pressure steam washer works too. I didn't try it in fear that it might take the paint off.

Whazzat..a wire across the front? Would that be for the second horn that 1971 cars were not supposed to have?

So is it frowned upon to use something like Rhino liner on the bottom to protect from the rocks and inhibit the rust or to worry that water maybe trapped between the liner and the steel? confused24.gif I was looking at a build and it appeared they used liner not only inside the passenger compartment, but on the underside additionally.

I wouldnt say its frowned upon. Personally, in CA, not necessary and I like the clean unaltered look of body color inside the fenders.

Correct! Either it was added at dealer or after by a P.O. First time I have seen one with the wiring outside the trunk, makes it look like its smiling at me.

Had the dent repair guy here today. All the little door dings and trunk dents taken care of. Things are progressing!

Another critical spot to look. Under the headlight bucket. Be sure this is clear of debris and not rusting at all.

Some updates. Front fenders have been stripped of undercoating using heat gun and mineral spirits. Struts cleaned and painted, new brake lines installed. New bearings packed with grease and now waiting on new rotor protective plates, and calipers being rebuilt.

Removed rear valance and need to price repair versus replace.

Interior new upholstery is all done and waiting on new carpet.
