Found out why my motor won't run correctly, spitting out the intake....

valves were tight on this cylinder...

took off the rocker shaft to replace an O-ring...rockers won't move on the shaft????

Turns out the rockers are galled to the shaft!!!! ohmy.gif sad.gif

So for sure this was holding the intake valve open....

anyone have a set of rocker shafts? at a minimum I need 1 shaft and 2 rockers...I am running swivel feet so need a 1.7? rocker???

If anyone has a complete set of 8 I will take them all...please contact me ASAP so I can get this monster running....

PM or email to hberwald@stonyfield.com...if you want, you can call to 603.370.1467.

thanks!

The rockers may be galled to the shaft for a reason. Like no oil or extreme heat. I would pull the head and check for further damage.

This is a new motor...looks like something got in there...could be some grit from grinding down the rockers...

JUst curious...why would you have ground the rockers?

Perhaps oil is not getting to the rockers due to clogged push rods. ? Did you clean them out?
Mark Henry
Hone the rockers and get new (used) shafts, 2.0, 1.8 or 1.7 the shafts are all the same.

As long as they are not too sloppy they will be OK.

Hey Mark...the inside of the one I got off was not too bad...the other is stuck tight...time to go to the press......

I still need the shaft!!!???? that does not sound right.... ohmy.gif

The rockers were ground to allow for the swivel feet....to fit the geometry with the longer adjusters.....

I have some used shafts you could have for the price of shipping.

Well, it looks like I can save the rocker arms.....both had a burr, ball of metal built up at the bottom of the arm....????

The shaft is gone....it is amazing what a nice press can do...came out like butter. I now have a nice hole in my basement floor from the hammer....

Hey, it help calm me down..!!!

To those to offered to send me some parts...I want them...thanks again..herb

Ouch...

This is scary...

Did you clean those pushrods well after you cut them and pressed in the tips?

Also, do you have pics of the ceramic lifters you used??
crash914
Jake, I did clean out the pushrods.. I have not yet pulled out the lifters..

I will guess here and say that there was some grit left inside the arm from grinding down the end to fit the swivel feet.

I will of course check the rest. I might have had a small chip inside the oil gallery. Although I don't see how it could have traveled through the lifter, pushrod arm to shaft.....

The galled metal is the same on both arms...to the crank side of the rocker shaft. Now that I have the arms off the shaft, the score is about the same....so, how did I screw up 2 rockers in the same spot???

Makes you go hmmmmmmm...

All that grinding material is death for the engine- death.

I cannot stress enough how every part has to be clean and dry with no debris. I wipe all parts down with alcohol or Ether as I assemble and blow them down with air on top of that.

Change that oil as soon as possible! Crank it, drive it around the block and then change the oil and filter.

I like ether. Makes for a short work day wacko.gif
