Full Version: Differences between 050 and 009

Hey doods!
So I swapped from my 009 and put in a 050 - both with the same pointless and CDI. 2056, with 40s, some exhaust work and a Euro "H" cam -
I've noticed a DEFINITE difference, and I was wondering if anyone here has had the same experience or not: with the 009 it seemed to have a pretty good hit at about 3500 rpms, almost like it 'wound up' and then let go, resulting in a nice lil' kick in the pants - it snarled pretty good too.
I now have the 050 in, timed at (if I remember correctly) 29 degrees at 3000rpm (again, I think that's what I set it at), and now, she's-a super smooth, really nice, no pinging, no shaking, nothing. Much quieter as well. It revs waaay smoother and faster, and literally shrieks all the way past 5 grand - but there's no more hit and no more snarl.
It doesn't seem to have a hit anymore - could that be because it's pulling now all the way from the low rpm range?
Tell me if this makes sense - I have always had 2 stroke MX bikes - sudden power surge, come on the pipe like a ton of bricks, and always have to keep them 'in the powerband', but I recently switched to a 4 stroker (Yammie 250F). TOTALLY different, very linear, no hit, just pulls from idle all the way up. You feel like your'e going slower when in actuality your'e going faster, there's just no huge arm pulling surge to remind you.

So, does all this make sense? Am I crazy? Should I just forget this nit-picky crap and just drive it? blink.gif

The 050 is tricking you...

They set up way retarded and normally idle at 0 degrees to attain 28 degrees full advance. I have found that 10-12 degrees of initial advance works wonders for down low driving and really cleans up the unburnt fuel below 3,000 RPM...

Some people love the 050, but its my least favorite dizzy.

It runs so nice, and my plugs are a nice light shade of chocolate (were oily before) Maybe I shouldnt' mess with it anymore - leave 'well enough alone'.
It's getting too late in the season to do any more driving - I'm satisfied for now, but I'm still saving for a Mallory....

mmm chocolate

Diff is....009 you actually still buy....the 050 is nla.

Any dizzy can be recurved...IF...you can find a shop that still does it. Jake likes the Mallory's if I remember...
scooter311
So how many here are actually running an 009 or 050 in this combo - Is it just a matter of preference? Have any seen the same shift in power / torque?
Brett W
There is a 009 that was used on some 2.0 engines. I found one on an engine I pulled out of a 73. It had FI trigger points and vaccum advance.
sanman
I did the exact same thing 2 mo ago. noticed the same thing. then I put in a pertronic, it got even better( smother and rev quicker)which makes me ask myself how much better can it get with a mallory. so that will be my next step . Wish I had a dyno to see the real diff.
Jake Raby
The dyno would scare the hell out of you...

The difference you are seeing is a figment of your imagination... The seat of the pants feels faster due to initial advance being faster in the midrange..

I have never dynoed an engine that made as much power with an 050 as a 009 and definately not as much as a Mallory......

i have a very similar setup, engine wise ...

i ran a 050, but it never worked right, junked it and replaced it with a 009.
now i'm getting the same "punch" you're describing at around 3500 rpm ...

seems to run just fine. i got a 1.8L dizzy from brad that i want to try.
it has vacuum ports and my intakes don't, so i need to do some smash.gif to get it to work.

we'll see ...

Hmmmmmmmmm now I don't know what to do - -
It's pain to swap the 009 back in to see a real back-to-back difference (optical trigger had to be adjusted for the different sized shaft, plus CDI wires an' schtuff) - I think I'll leave it alone for now, and save for something better. One thing I like about the 050 so far, is the head temp seems a bit lower, and really stable, at 250/275. Maybe I'll have some time to tinker before it gets really bad out - I heard we're supposed to get 3 inches of snow tonite mad.gif

So I guess I'll start returning bottles or something to buy a Mallory and a better ignition system later. Does it ever end? wacko.gif

no. never.

but you already knew that.

now Im confused I thought the 050 was better and the 009 was complete junk. So Jake I should go back to the 009. at this rate I will never finish the car. I feal like $hit now took me two week to find the 050. I thought Jake said the 050 curve was better for T4 than the 009.
Jake Raby
Buy a Mallory........

I never said the 050 curve is better, I don't care for the 050... Many others have said it is better, but I never did..

The Mallory is the best unit that anyone can bolt on their TIV engine- Period.
scooter311
Hey sanman don't feel bad - chalk it up to experience. It looks like it's a tradeoff for what an individual feels better with maybe - Do you want smooth, or do you want a hit?
I like how smooth it is now, but miss the hit. witht he 009, I could get my idle pretty smooth, but it still shook a tiny bit (sunvisor would rattle, whatever else was loose would rattle and annoy me at stoplights), but it was cool to take off and whack second and third gear and feel/hear a little oomph at 3500 / 4 grand. However now, I swear I can balance a glass of water on the oil cap (okay okay, I'm exaggerating!!) - my girlfriend even noticed how "good' it ran and how quiet it was, comparatively speaking. AND I have carbs to boot!

BAH, at least it's finally running, no matter what the heck is in there - my current focus is now on getting a new set of wheels. Anyone wanna buy a nice set of 7 inch cookie cutters and tires ! - off to the classifieds.......
sanman
I think I will stay with the 050 but I will go home today and try the 009 w/pertronic back to back. But I think the 050 is better for my need. Sorry Jake I agree you never said it.

I would by a Mallory... but I'm holding out for the Kit Carlson EFI, which will fix everything.

I wonder if it will be in Santa's sleigh??
Jake Raby
I just logged 6,000miles on my Kit Carlson test system in the 912. Dave is working on the production as fast as he can...

The demand for these units is insane, I get 15 emails a day concerning at- atleast..

Get a dizzy out of a 1.8 or 2.0 FI motor and pull the vaccum can off and get rid of teh FI points. Then play with the spring rates inside. That dizzy works well with about 36Deg of total advance.
