i have a '75 teener here...a 1.8...i bought a set of gently used SS heat exchangers from "a guy" here...in the picture...so, i think it may matter what year exhaust bits i get...'ja?

That set are from an earlier car than your 75.
Yes they can work...but you will need to replace/backdate a few items.
Muffler, hanger, J tubes, branch pipes, Warm air elbows ect.

Those are 1.7L/1.8L (pre '75). You'll need a compatible exhaust/muffler and compatible muffler hanger.

that's my deck in the 2nd picture.

if you are switching your 75', you'll need every item for 74' and earlier. branch ducting, warm air elbows, j-tubes, warm air guides (side and tail shift dr sides are dif) and as noted the correct exhaust/muffler and gaskets. the stub tubes and convoluted he's on the 75' can be a pain to remove. when i did a conv i just cut the the 75' stuff apart with a reciprocating saw and a handfull of metal blades

Wow, Britcarjim, what great information! I had to learn the hard way. It has been my experience with Porsche, that when you try to make a small modification/swap etc. there is usually a lot more to it than meets the eye

Is the inner diameter of the actual exhaust pipe the same for 2.0 vs 1.7/1.8 and/or did it change over the model years?

I think the consensus has been that the stock 1.7/1.8 pipes are smaller diameter than 2.0, but on the SS ones it's a marginal difference if at all. Might even be the same. Believe there is a whole thread on that as well...

very interesting. as my "handle" and signature would suggest, i am not new to the idea of "more complicated than initially suggested." i just new to that on the 9-1-4.

between this thread and a couple pm's i have the idea that the pre-'75 is more user friendly and that there are more parts available. since i'll be taking everything apart anyway, i think i'll swap.

hopefully steve i'm gonna get a chance over the weekend to put it up on stands and take a bunch of reference pictures. i'll zap a couple to you when i have them.

i picked up the SS exchanger over in the classifieds without realizing it was for the wrong year...but it was cheap. really doesn't matter because all of the stuff i'll have to swap out...were worn out or FUBARed anyway. no big deal.

The best part is once you do a complete switchover to the 74 and earlier parts you will have heat.

I made the same mistake, bought a set ended up it was the 1.8 not 2.0 but does not matter i got such a great deal i just orderd the 1.8 triad to go with it. And got the heater tube parts from someones stash of spares. They were dirty and oily but after a bath with degrease, dawn, and primer and paint good as new. While you are at it get your new hardware and gaskets, and the rubber gromets that go between the tin and the tube AA and a couple others have them new. I forgot mine first time around and had a nice rattle. Just remember the muffler hanger is different as well. I

That's a late model 75/76. 1.8/2.0.

That is the original 75-76 only heat exchangers.

Is that a hole in the top of the upper he pictured? Unless you have more parts not pictured you'll have to go shopping. Again. If you use those you need to source the l&r warm air guides. Hope you didn't pay too much shipping for those.

The hole is typ. for this version of HE's its common that all the places circled in red can / will be worn through rendering the the HE ineffective for its purpose.
You can see the collector section missing from one. The specific "J" pipes missing altogether.
The Green you should check on ALL HE's for rot / leakage (with perhaps the SSI's an exception)

Yes. There is a hole in that heater shroud. Looks man made or factory but didn't really inspect it too closely. I can't use it because the collector where you mount the muffler is totally different. I paid 30.00 bucks for shipping. And I gave the guy a few bucks for his time. My fault. I didn't know that this variation existed. Now I do. Still on the hunt for I guess an early 2.0 exchanger or pipes. If someone wants these LMK! I can't use them.

To top it off. A different member here (not going to mention any names) sold me a set of exchangers and muffler that were totally mismatched! What I got was a 1.7 exchanger and a 2.0 muffler. So now I have 2 1.7 exchangers. This late 2.0 HE and 2 early 2.0 mufflers!! At this point it feels like I'll never get my exhaust fixed!

The 75-76 HE's will give you more room to adjust your valves.

Are the 1.7 he's in good shape? A left and a right? SS? If yes to 1 and 2, run with the 1.7s, sell the 2.0 mufflers, a post a wtb appropriate muffler for the he's you're going to use. Get out of this mess with as little $ spent as possible.

One good think is I did get a decent set of 1.7/1.8 HE out of this. So I can work towards getting heat working in the car. Think that's going to be my plan.

The heating shrouds that go around the pipes are fairly solid without a lot of movement. They seem to be on there tight.

Those appear to serviceable. The pitting on the piping is not uncommon.

I'm sorry if this turned into a high jack of the thread. My apologies to the OP. Perhaps though this is useful info!? I know I've learned something!

It's on topic. No blood no foul. Maybe start your own thread about what's required to get them heating the interior.
