SouthCali914
Hello all,

Finally was able to register my account so I thought I would introduce myself.

My name is Geoffrey & my recent acquisition of a 74 1.8 914 would be the reason for joining the group.

I got an awesome deal on my not too rusty little gem, paid a thousand bucks. she's completely stock but for wheels (empi eight spokes) stereo, electronic ignition & an addco type front swaybar.

thus far I have brought all the maintenance up to date with a valve adjustment, plugs, filters...

I also was getting some noise out of the wheel brgs so I replaced them all. I also replaced the dry rotted pizza cutter tires with new 195/60/15's & dropped the front ride height to get rid of the nose in the air look.

next up is saving the car. I.E. fixing the rust. In this regard I feel I got pretty lucky. small amounts of surface rust here and there with the worst of it being spots under the rocker panels at the jacking points, under the passenger side headlamp & at the lower firewall on the drivers side.

right now she's what I call a rolling resto. I'm currently d/d her while I finish the restafication of my 91 Galant VR4.

One the Galant is finished, hopefully in the next six months or so, the teener will go under the knife. right now I'm leaning towards the wrx swap but having a good friend working in a local VW shop I may let him talk me into a 2056 build... jury is still out.

About me; I have been a car guy/mechanic for about 25 years. I have restored & modified more cars than I can count for myself, my friends & my customers.

I look forward to being an active member of the 914 community & look forward to meeting some of you guys & seeing your projects first hand.

I live in Fallbrook, located in north San Diego county CA. so if you happen to see my little white, for now, Beater, feel free to say hello.

so far I have only seen a couple others on the road. one really nice guy with a nice orange 2.0 & another white one running around Escondido with a trunk rack.

Peace, Geoffrey.

Jersey style welcomes to the club! A tidbit of advice if I may, this group loves pictures so post them as often as possible. Might as well start with a few shots of the 74' outside the doors!

Will get you all some pics soon as the camera finishes charging. Unfortunately all the pics I had of her when I brought her home got stolen, along with my camera, when my truck got broken into.

In other words it looks a lot less like it came up from the titanic at this point compared to when I pulled it out of the field.

I'm off now to pull the back pad & see if I can fix the engine cover release & int light. I'm also curious as to how much rust I'll find opposing what's on the engine side of the firewall. for the moment budget only allows for treating, stopping the spread of rust, not actual repairs. I don't want it getting any worse in the mean time.

Thanks for the welcomes beerchug.gif

welcome.png It is always a pleasure to see another nut.... er.... enthusiast join the madness. I am envious that you are able to DD your car before you start to really dig into it. I was able to drive my car up the street once the tow truck dropped it and into my garage for a total of maybe 100 feet sad.gif .

good thing I was taking pics for you guys, found the aux fan tube off & trying to get sucked into the fan.

The int. actualy looks a lot better in person than the pics & the wheels are the result of about twelve hours of refinishing. My buddies where ranking me quite bad over them before.

Looks good. The only time rust "isn't very bad" is when it's on someone else car. dry.gif That rusted out area behind the drivers seat is usually worse on the right side. Check it out. welcome.png

That's a great car for all the twisty roads you've got out there. Enjoy!

I must first get my Galant vr4 out of Jsb status. Then trust me, she won't see the road again for at least a year. smash.gif Click to view attachment

Hey, in another thread you wrote:

Ok, got mine figured out & fixed. The starter solenoid just wants more amps than are making from the bat to the ignition & back to the starter.

I had removed & cleaned all my grounds, all of them! Hiding all over the damn place headbang.gif

Checked for voltage drop to the ignition switch & back at the solenoid. The solenoid from time to time wants more amps than that circuit will give it for size & length.

So I added a relay. Put it right next to the starter. About six inches of heavy gauge wire from the main starter bat+ lug & again back to the solenoid. ran the ground to the solenoid mounting screw & energize it with the original solenoid wire.

It has cranked over much better at all times now & happy to report Zero no-crank issues.

Took far longer to diag than to repair.

To sum up. if you have a random no-crank pull the solenoid wire & see if it will light up a good test light. if it will then add a relay & call it fixed. If not you have my sympathy, it's not a fun circuit to trace.

Upside I learned how to rebuild my underhood relay block. now my voltage always stays above 12. beerchug.gif

Exactly how did you wire that relay/solenoid/starter? Sounds different than the way mine is setup. I'll send you a PM.

I mounted my relay right above the starter under the rear trunk. I ran the relay ground up to the same bolt I used to mount the relay. ran a heavy gauge wire from the batt lug to the relay & again from the relay back to the solenoid on the starter. then simply plugged in the start impulse (yellow wire) to activate the relay.

You want the relay as close as reasonable to the starter so you loose as few amps in the circuit as possible.

Pulling power from the starter batt lug was the shortest route & led to the cleanest install.

I'll post up a pic later when I have time.

My brother called and said he was reading this thread and noticed there was some asswhole who was being rude to a new member. Then he realized it was me and he understood. Guess I should be more welcoming to new members. I'll need to make an effort in that direction....
