I have had 1.8 and 2.0. I don't think one engine is fundamentally louder than the other. I think the determining factors are how they are equipped and how much of the sound dreading materials are present. I think carbs are louder than FI when you have your head in the engine bay. But just the difference in mufflers can determine which one is louder. But I think all of us will agree that loudness is part of the reason we love the 914.

Showroom stock there is not much of a difference.
But where can you find a showroom stock car these days.
How its equipped makes all the difference.
Sound deadening. Lots of folks remove it.
Mufflers. Some are much louder.
Carbs. Dual IDF carbs SCREAM at 4000 rpm.
But engine size does not make much of a difference.

Download a free Decibel meter and post your results here. With no radio & 2.0 carbs and stock muffler I consistently run 82 - 89 dbl's.
