I was going to put this in the sandbox, but I am sure there will be some 914 content soon enough.

Like many of you guys, I have always had a thing for classic cars. The early ones were the $300 to $500 rot-box daily drivers that l had back in the 80's when in High School; I had a whole bunch of early bugs, several muscle cars and a few 914's. Even though some of these early ones were rusty, cheap transportation, I always fixed them up and took care of them.

Back in 1995 I was living in California and got the itch for a new toy. I looked for a rust free late 60's vintage car to take back East and found a 1968 Buick Skylark Custom convertible. It was a base model car that needed a new top but it was an Arizona car with an absolutely mint body and interior. The Buick was yellow with a white interior, tons of chrome, skirts on the rear fenders and whitewall tires on factory rally rims. It looked like a car someone’s grampa should be driving. It was exactly what I was looking for, so I bought it and I shipped it back East. When I got back home I found a matching convertible 1968 Skylark GS-400 rot-box that had a 430 big block in it, completely rebuilt the engine & drivetrain and combined the two cars into one. She was a tank, handled like shit but was a big, comfortable ride and the ultimate sleeper; it was insane how fast this car was. It was also a great tow vehicle as it had tons of power. I would constantly drag my boat up to the lakes in New Hampshire in the summer.

I had more fun driving this road that led out to the beach that was a popular hangout. The road was nothing but a series of closely spaced stoplights. I constantly had kids pulling up beside me wanting to race, and the Skylark would blow the doors off everything; newer Mustangs, IROC's and all the ricer BS. I would have guys pulling over at the beach asking to see what I had in it for an engine, and they couldn’t believe it when I would open the hood and a completely stock looking engine was sitting in there. Ahhh, nothing like a big block.

I had lots of fun with the car and have a ton of good memories but for whatever reason I got tired of it and decided to sell her. I sold it back in 2002 to a guy who lives somewhat local to me. I found out where he lived one day when I drove by & saw the Skylark in his driveway. I stopped in and talked with him for a while and politely gave him grief when I realized that the car had been living outside uncovered since I sold it to him sad.gif (like I should care, I don’t own it anymore). He claimed that he was planning on building a shop but was going to get one of those temporary garages for it until then. That was eight years ago. I drove by a few times over the years, and it would always be covered with a cheap blue tarp.

It had been a long time since I had seen the car. I saw it last summer driving on the highway and was horrified when I saw how rotted the rear fenders were; the damage was so bad that it no longer had the fender skirts in place WTF.gif . This car was rust free when he bought it. I was taking my 4 year old daughter to her cousin’s birthday party this afternoon in New Hampshire so I took a slight detour out of curiosity to drive by his house. I could see that my old car was sitting out in the middle of the guy’s back yard, on the lawn buried in the snow, the blue tarp covering it was all torn up and half hanging off the car. A frozen pile of snow/ iceberg was sitting directly on the top.

It's not like I really miss owning the Buick, but it really bothered me seeing it today. Why would someone buy such a clean car and just let it deteriorate? Like he couldn't of bought at least a proper car cover or something for it? I truely wish I had sold the Skylark to anyone else than this clown, I can’t believe how poorly he has treated my old car. mad.gif Some people are just so clueless!

I regretted selling both my 71 and 72 MGB back in the early 90s. So I bought another 71 B a few years ago. Well, I decided to go German and sold the B to get a 914. If everything goes well, I will be a proud owner of a 914 soon. No more regrets of the MGBs.

Out of the 70 or so cars I have owned, this is the only car I truly regret selling. 1996 Carrera 4S in turquoise blue

65', 67', 69' GTOs - the latter I spent $5K in 77' $$$ on to completely restore and add my own special touch (455 SD with dry sump, leather buckets, diamond tucked, banana yellow paint with 8 coats of laquer before clear, gold pearl for fun, 4" wide candle-apple stripe following contours from front fenders to rear for meaness, new rear tires every 2 months or so).

My favorite was my 83 YUGO. Hahahaha, just kiddin.

I had a 73 911S. 2.4 MFI, sunroof coupe. leather Recaros. Kick ass car. I sold it shortly after a divorce in about 1996 for $13,000. One of my worst decisions EVER.

I haven't regretted anything I sold, but I'm starting to regret some of the ones I scrapped. Like that 67 S and the 2 oval windows unsure.gif Thinking hard about selling a couple of my future projects now, probably will regret that eventually, but I can't build but so many in my time sad.gif

88' 16v Scirocco. I couldn't afford to keep it anymore, had just bought a new Golf and my landlord strongly suggested I get rid of the non-op car in the driveway. So I donated it to the American Kidney Foundation. Came home from work and it had been towed away. Nothing left but an empty spot in the driveway. Sometimes I still dream about it (honestly).

I wish I had just handful of the cars that we in the parking lot of my High School, some that were mentioned above. Some of my favorites were a 67 Roadrunner, 69 GTO convertible, 68 Firebird convertible, an Opal GT, a bunch of Mustangs, Chevelles and the stoner crew with the various VW products. There were so many cool cars that were our daily drivers back then. But you can't keep them all.

I never really thought much about my Skylark after I sold it; I had my fun with it and it was unloaded to trade up to some other toys. I am just pissed about how the buyer has abused it. I wish I never found out where he lived, but it is right on a major road that I drive every once in a while.

The only one I somewhat regret was my 74 914 2.0 due to the memories attached to her; I had lots of fun with that car. I sold it back in 1993 when I living in LA to Otto's as a parts car because a jackstand found some rot. After discovering this site & reading all the repair threads I realized that the car was quite repairable and compared to many would have been an easy fix sad.gif .

Sold my 71 914 in perfect condition back in ~96 for $2K

Also sold a fully restored 62 lincoln continental with red leather interior & pearl paint job & suicide doors that was owned by the US secratary of the treasury. The signature on the title matched the $5 bill at the time. For ~$2k.

Looked like this but pearl white:

My list of regrets:

'58 Bug
'67 Ghia
'79 Honda Civic Special X (would really be worth something now)
Chris H.
Owned a lot of cars in the 80's and 90's. Mostly air cooled VWs and Hondas.

There's only one I miss terribly....

1964 Sunroof Beetle - Panama Beige, all original Cali car imported to Illinois in the early 80's.

A few years after I sold it I saw it driving around in the small town I lived in...gave chase for a couple of miles but the driver ignored the honking and waving.

Still have the owners manual with records back to 1977.

Ford Escort MK II RS2000

Would love to get another RS2000, if you hear of one let me know!

78 911 SC Grand Prix White (Crank windows, no ac, no sunroof, chrome trim, driver side mirror only, factory sport seats) Kind of a club sport by today's standards.

My dads 56 Speedster. Said I could have it but it needed some rust repair. Spent a whole summer grinding rust when I was 17. I got tired of it and we sold it for 10 grand in 1977 ! now it would be worth 150K !

Of the 40 or so I've owned over the past 25 years I've regreted selling several, a 66 VW Bus, 64 Bug, 67 Malibu and a 91 Audi 20VTQ come to mind as ones I really liked and wish I still had but in recent years the two I miss the most are my 89 944 S2 and my friends Dads old 65 Buick Riviera. Both of which I had to sell to pay bills and back taxes. I had a lot of time into those cars sad.gif I felt horrible selling the Riviera. I'd been around that car since I was a little kid. It's somewhere in Seattle and I've tried to keep in touch with the guy on the off chance I can buy it back someday. Some of those previous cars in this thread blow my mind...wow!

My first 914... a carbed Olympic blue 1973. Vanity plate, "914".

It went to some 914 guy in Washington State (near the puget sound? don't remember). Hope he took care of it.

Sold my 68 Z28/RS when we had the gas shortage and gas went from 33 to 66 cents overnight back in the late 70's. . . I sold my 69 Z28 [72000 miles all orig car] in 2002. . because I never drove it. .
Then the last collector one to go was my 49 MG-TC in 2004. . it was all original, with 32ooo miles. . even had the orig carpet, seats. . . should have kept them all. . . Had a girlfriend back in 76 that her everyday street car was a 289 Shelby Cobra [not Mustang]. . should have kept her and the car. . .
