Just installed my front hood. The release cable works well, but it does not retract on its own (you have to manually push it back). Is this how it is supposed to operate? I found a rogue spring in the front trunk a while ago and I am wondering if it came out of the latch mechanism.

Thanks,

Bob

There is suppose to be a little, but somewhat strong, spring inside the latch assembly. . It helps the handle and cable return but it's not uncommon to need to help it by pushing the handle back in.

I have to push my handle back in every time. No problem.

It should return on it own but not all do after 40 years.

Make sure the cable and all the pivot points are lubed

My last MGB did that too, and yes, I just push it back in. On my 914, it goes back in on it's own, but I still push it in just to be sure confused24.gif

Thanks for the info... beerchug.gif

The spring I found in the trunk definately came from the latch to help it on the return motion. Re-installed it but didn't notice much difference in the operation:
