I think I dropped a tin screw in one of those holes (go figure.. )

So now I'm assuming I need to check to make sure cuz I'm sure it'll be a bad day if it did go in there and I don't get it out...

I've never separated a transmission from the engine in the 914. How big of a deal is it? Is anything gonna fly out if I just unbolt all the perimeter bolts around the edge?

It's one of those jobs you spend more time and effort worrying about than it actually takes to do it.

Jack'er up and support the engine.
Put a jack under the tranny and remove the bolts.
Slide it back enough so the fastener drops out.
Installation is the reverse of this procedure.

There's an equally big hole in the bottom of the transmission where it will eventually fall out. Even if it doesn't, I doubt it will do any harm.

Drop 100 screws in there and you may have a problem.

If it's stuck by the throw out bearing or any interior hardware you will notice it right away. The pedal may not depress or clutch will not disengage . If you start it and it drives fine, most likely you will be ok

I looked near the bottom and there it was! Dab of axle grease on the tip of a screwdriver and it was out. Ahhh I can sleep easy tonight.

Kool you did it! Now how the hell did you drop that In there with the transmission mounted?

Engine and Trans are out of the car up on a stand.. was re-installing some tin pieces today and had the "baggie" of my screws sitting on top of the tranny. Took it out of the bag and wouldn't you know it? of all the places it falls into the hole in the top...

dirty is right!! I've been using everything to try to get this thing clean.. brake cleaner, degreaser, screwdriver, wire brush... stuff is hard as a rock and thick.... I don't even really know what it is. It's either CV axle grease, oil, or some type of "undercoating"...

Engine leaked pretty badly from the pushrod tubes (already fixed) so I'm assuming it's many years of caked on oil spraying... damn PO's...

I have crap like that all over my transmission too. It looks like globs of black tar.

Simple Green. Spray it on. Soak 10 minutes. Scrub brush. Garden hose it off. Repeat as needed. Simple will devolve paint after 5-6 hours so wash it down good.
