Full Version: Spun Rear Wheel Bearing?

I was in the process of replacing the rear trailing are bushings. The right rear wheel bearing had a great deal of play.

The hub was so lose it came out of the bearing without a puller or drift. Evidently the inner bearing race spun on the nose of the hub. The nose of the hub is worn down. It is now about 0.015" undersized.

These are 911 5-bolt hubs and 100mm 944 CV joints on modified 944 axles. The cotter pins were intact and the Castle Nuts were tight (evidently not tight enough).

Are there any alternative to replacing the hub?

Repair sleeve?
Loctite 680?
Resize (weld and grind)?

Anyone have a 914/6 or 911 (1969-73) rear hub for sale.

Thanks

I'd replace it. If the bearing was spun it was probably heated up pretty good too. It's likely to be brittle.

I think PMB performance sells repros.

You could have it flame sprayed and ground back to size, unless of course there really is heat damage. Might cost you more than a replacement, though.
