I purchased a 914 late last year to work on with my sons and have been working on cleaning up the engine. I was "told" by the PO that the car was a 1974 1.8L. Well the VIN and date code on the door panel indicate a 1974 chassis, but I could never locate the engine code. After some cleaning up, I found the engine code of EA035662. Looking at the engine code chart on the World, this indicates a 1972 or 1973 1.7L. The guy who is doing some welding on my car said he thought the engine was a 1975 or 1976 b/c it looked like it had some emissions stuff on it. I don't know enough about these engines YET to know the difference. I took a few photos, tell me what you think.

Go to the 914 info tab at the top right of your screen. It shows all EA prefix numbers are 1.7 liter engines. But I now see you have already checked that. That doesn't mean the previous owner didn't swap or modify the engine .

The oil breather/filler is a '73 1.7 or a '73-74 2.0 The heads are '73 1.7. I'm betting on 1.7 as the answer to your question.

The fan housing is also for later cars with smog stuff and I noticed that you also have later (75-'76) exhaust so I'm assuming you have a 1.7L with a mix of later parts added.

It's hard to tell on a 40 year old engine, could be original, or could have been rebuilt 'x' times since new.

If you want to know more about what you have, you can pull the heads to measure bore & stroke.

Thanks for your input. What little I know about the PO, I figured that what I have is a mish-mash of parts from different years, but wanted input from more experienced teeners.

What shows us that the heads are 73 1.7 ones? The plugs are obviously not at the right angle for 2.0 heads, but why not 1.8 heads, or earlier 1.7 heads? Just curious...

Yup. Vents. 1.8s didn't have 'em, nor did pre-'73 1.7s.
