My first posting.
I have just bought my first 914 in a lot of years. biggrin.gif It's a '72 1.7 in pretty good condition. Other than a '73 side shift tranny it is pretty much stock. I want to keep the D-jet FI but want to dump the oil bath aircleaner if possible. I understand the oil bath air cleaner went the way of the dinosaur in '73. If so can I just put a '73 paper filter cleaner on and have all the hoses hook up OK? If so does anyone have a '73 air cleaner for sale?

For now I am going to do some cleaning, add a 2.0 liter apperance group consule, and a set of chrome steel wheels with the stock hubcaps. Then go driving. I know it 's not that simple. But all the little things to fix is why I bought it.

Thanks for any help.

I did this same conversion on my '72. It's been a long time so I'm going from memory. I found that all the hoses hooked up, except the "pre-heater" hose. I live in the cold country of Northern Arizona and I never missed it - even in winter. Unfortunately the cleaner was removed when I removed the engine so I can't go look at it to confirm this or take pictures.

If you can find a 73 air cleaner setup, all will work...

If you can't, then PVC pipes and bends are your friends!! Together with a cone-type filter (K&N or similar) and a rain shield of some kind, you can replace the oil bath filter. With an oiled-gauze filter... Whatver... wink.gif

What Dave said. It'll breath better too.

Nothing will actually work "better" than what the factory designed. They just work "different" or "look better"

nope ...
the oil-bath is actually the better design. they work very well ...

but, as said above, all the later style paper element filters will work, all the hoses should fit just fine ...

Ran my Oil bath on the 1.7L engine. Once I figured out what it do with them it worked OK. Even Autocrossing although sometimes if I over filled it I would spill some in a hard corner.
