I'm looking for a good solution to the perfomance exhaust, but with heat, problem for my '70 914 that I converted to 3.0L SC- powered 6 cyl. I've tried borrowed factory 914-6 heater boxes, and they kill the mid-range power (oddly, not so much the top end, but that still makes them unacceptable). I also had a friend with a similar car ('72 2.4L S engine) who bought the B&B stainless headers with heat, and they simply don't put out enough heat (perhaps it's OK in Phoenix, but not in San Francisco). Looking on the web recently, I found this listing by GHI, another performance exhaust outfit in the Phoenix area: 914-6 All Years T-304 Stainless Steel Headers Only w/Heat Exchangers 15/8\" Primary Pipes
The photo on this page shows the heater boxes as much larger than those on the B&B units, so I wonder if they work better. Anyone?

i remember someone posting about them quite a while ago. do a search here on the board, make sure you select "Any Date" for the range as the search defaults to "Last 30 days" ...

they do look nice (in the pic), plus SS gives you more and faster heat than just steel.

too bad SSI doesn't make any HE's for the /6 ...

They look like a PITA to install, though. No direct access to the exhaust studs above the boxes.

Strange... upto the 3.2 carrera engine, 1.5" diameter headers are advised.
IIRC the 914/6 H/E's are 1.5" diameter
Bigger diameter pipes are bad for mid range torque and good for top HP (opposite of what you posted)

BTW, the company you're referring to is called GHL not GHI

Heat in Phoenix? We don't need no stinkin heat. Already got too much. cool_shades.gif

While some "park their cars for the winter," we drive with the top down. About 55 and sunny yesterday-drove the 2.0 to work with the top off. Refreshing. driving.gif

But iffen you aint got a/c in the summer and don't like to shine with sweat, we parks 'em. (Actually, night driving after the sun goes down is kinda fun).

Idea: idea.gif Summer night time run to one of the local reservation casinos for food and fun.

Welcome to the club.

Larry,

Would you expand on mid range performance loss? Actually I'm looking for a good excuse to remove mine this spring. Is the differance really that noticable? Rpm range that is effected?

Thanks,

ID of stock 914-6 HE's is 1 1/4". Factory heat exchangers are very good parts, and that's what I'd use on anything up to and including a 3.0.

I've sold four sets of the B& B stainless headers with heat. For the money you pay you'd think they'd get them right, but they don't always do that. Heater boxes are very small. The GHL ones look pretty good, if they fit right and the muffler bolts up right (a big problem with B&B's). Pretty much the same price as the B&B's. I'll be using those for the next customer that wants new SS heaters.

Some people are home-making shells to go over mild steel headers. These same people may die in their car someday, from CO1 poisoning.

Is the 1 5/8 the internal or external measurement?
