The heat exchangers on my 1975 1.8 are dirty but have no rust. They appear to me to be Stainless steel. Are they? Did they come stock on my car?
Thanks for the help

If a magnet sticks they are not. If it doesn't, they are.
None were SS stock.

Those are stock 75/76 single pipe HE, used on both 1.8L& 2.0L engines. They either had a coated sheet metal or aluminum because they never seem to rust. Of course they choke the exhaust flow down to 1 pipe, so many people back date to 73/74 2.0 HE or SSIs.

I think they did come stock on your car.
and not they are not stainless.
I would not spend the money to backdate cause they are dirty or to gain 5hp.
especially if you need heat and your heat is now working fine.

Primary reason to do this because the rattles are driving me crazy! Otherwise everything is working perfectly

back date and use bursch type collector because:
cooler head temps
wider torque curve
less rattles
SSI weighs less
availability of the tin piece that keeps your speedo and clutch cable from melting
