After working on the 914 for years and wondering how much abuse the rear trunklid can handle, I thought about a: fender-protector-toolkit that would lay across the rear hood while working on the engine.

I imagine a toolkit that looks like a briefcase when folded up.
When you set it down on the rear decklid, it would open into:
One center section with magnetic base-tray that holds nuts, bolt, etc.
The two flip-down sides would hold all of the tools that we would ever need working on these engines (short list;-).

As you open the toolkit, the two sides would flip down, and then two "flaps" would flip out as fender protectors.

All of it would have strategically placed magnets to hold it in place.

So who has the sewing machine & the spare time to make a prototype with input from the rest of us?

I have a sketch that I could scan as a starter.

It's been done, and lots of happy customers.

I use a Mexican blanket that found its way into my shop years ago...fits great, does the trick.

I have one. It is perfect.

I prefer the pattern in this style:

My wife made me one and I love it.
I really like the wings that cover the sides of the engine lid opening.
If you tweak the pattern just a bit the seam on each side will fit down
into the trunk gap and help hold it in place.
I recommend using all 4 magnets and not cutting the right and left edges
of the pattern until the very last.
Because of the curve of the trunk and the extra width
of the fenders you don't want them be right
angles to the back edge (the edge along the bottom of the pattern).
If you cut the sides at 90 degrees like the pattern, then it
will not be prefectly horizontal when it is on the car.
