I have not welded before but I would like to be able to do some tack welding on a few parts (new battery tray....).

Will this cheap model work on the 914 steal? I know I could spend more for better but I don't plan on doing a lot of welding just would like to have the capability to fix a few thing.

I can tell you this much, I picked that up last year and tried to weld , I almost gave up on welding.

Gunny, I wouldn't try it w/ that equipment. That being said I'm sure there are people here who's welding talents surpass mine and would have no problem. Flux core is OK for outdoors, windy situations. It splatters a lot. Here is the key. You said you don't plan on welding much. None of us did when we started, either. The fact of the matter is once you begin welding you start finding other things you want to weld and eventually your equipment holds you back. If it's financial borrow a good rig or ask one of the locals if you can "come by" and get a few tips. Most of us would be glad to tack that up for you.

Just like buying a 914. Get the best one you can afford the first time. You wouldn't be disappointed.

Your better off renting a welder when you need one. Or better yet search your craigslist for one of the following

I paid $500 for my entire used but pristine Miller Mig set up off Craigs List. Rick is right on this one.

I bought one off Craigslist with a 350QF full gas tank for $150. The welder didn't work so I sold the tank for $200 and sent the welder to Modesto to repair. They charged me $125 to repair including pick up and delivery! I traided one of my CO2 Keg bottles for a small 3lb mixed gas and now have a great welder for $75!!

You just have to wait for the deal to come to you!
