Yeehaa, i finally got a Quaife (Dave at GPR is great!) and now its again gearbox time.
This seasons saldo was 3 final drive's and 5cv's, so i'am running out of spare parts, still one set of fd though.

Does anyone have picture and/or dimensions of the special mandrel P258? Could also buy one if someone have extra to sell.
I need to adjust my final drive.
I might still need to do the job without proper tools smile.gif any ideas for that?

You can set the ring and pinion using prussian blue, or white grease..

just smear some on the ring gear, then rotate the shaft, pull the dif out and check the pattern in the grease. the pinion should bear in the middle section of the ring gears teeth.

In theory you should not have to measure the Pinon depth. Just use the same thikness gaskets between the case and the intermediate. You can verify the proper depth by white grease on the ring gear, torquing everthing up and rotating the Pinon shaft. Take the Diff Cover off and verify the grease is rubbed of the center of the teeth. If not you then have to change gasket thickness.

BUT the big thing you have to do when putting in the new differental is:

1. Be sure the bolts that hold the ring gear to the Diff are long enough. I do not know about the Quaif, but the ZF requires longer bolts.

2. You have to set the Diff. Backlash & Pre-load. This is described in the Porsche manuals. 914 & 911 descriptions are the same.

Good luck & be patient - I just finished my ZF conversion.

Thank's guys.
Ok, the special tool is then out of the question.
I was thinking about the colour thing so thats it then.
Ken, the bolt thing was also new to me, i have to check that one.
Did you found the grooved bolts or are you using some other way to secure those bolts?
I have the Russek book where is the info about setting the backlash and pre-load.
Once again thank you guys.

One of those sold at the tool auction I went to for $105.

I was the guy who said no at $100. headbang.gif

I would not recommend you use any other bolts.

The bolts and clips are avaialble from Porsche.

Bolt - 901 332 276 11

clip - 901 332 285 01

You might check with Quaif about the bolts & if the backlass shims need to be changed.

If you have to re-set the Backlass & Pre-load:

I suggest you get an old set of Diff Bearings and using a rotory sander, or somthing else, open them up so they just slip over the Diff. shafts.

This way you can easily adjust the shims, otherwise you have to use a "puller"everytime to remove the bearings.

I used this methode and found when I put in "new" bearings and races nothing changed.

I put a quaiffe in my 901 box a few years ago, I had to get ne bolts for the ring-gear. The bolts I got were 12.9 but had no groove for the lock rings, so I just red loctited them
