Bet that thing has a NARROW power band. Takes 12,000 rpm to get just 340 HP! More then likely it will stall if it gets below 10,500 rpm smile.gif

It's only a 2 litre and also makes very low torque (190 lb-ft). Sounds like a nice fit for the 914 & 914 transmission. Bet they want a fortune for one though.

It would be a dog on the street concidering the cost.

For 1/10th the cost you could build a V8 that has 3 times the torque and twice the hp.
The only thing that is really good about it is the low weight.

Is it just me, or does this thing sound like a motorcycle? 163 pounds? Read the specs a little closer. I think this would be an awesome engine in a 914. I couldnt find the price though.

putting a motor like this into a vehicle does not fall into the "practical" list..

........you do it cause you can smile.gif

I was dissapointed by the sound, thought it would be different and sound better

I just love the way it looks, it's damn near cute wub.gif

It should sound like a motorcycle. It's two 1000cc bike engines on a common crankcase. Yamaha YZF1000 engines, the article said. This kind of thing is remarkably common in the UK, where they have a number of small displacement racing classes with very liberal rules. The original bike engines in stock form probably make 150-180hp, so the idea that two of them would make 340hp isn't too surprising. The powerband on a typical literbike now starts at 6-7k and really goes to town above 9k. There's a reason most bikes have six-speed gearboxes...

what happens to all the old Cosworth and the like Indy car engines?

seems like a de-tuned motor would be a perfect match for a 914 smile.gif

The site said they are working to put one in an elise soon...so putting one in a 914 isn't that crazy, personally I think it would make a great 914 engine.

my car is around 2000lbs...with this engine it would be around 1800, so add some fiberglass and you are in elise weight range...the biggest problem (as with any 914 engine swap) would be the tranny...

I thought it sounded pretty sweet, but I like the way sport bikes sound... beer.gif

So, has anyone taken two S2k engines and mated them together yet? ohmy.gif

They're used by vintage racers. There are shops, mostly in the UK, that specialize in rebuilding these things. I believe there's one shop that's bought all the rights and tooling to the DFV, for example, and is THE place to go to get a DFV refurbished. Was highlighted in Racecar Engineering an issue or two ago, as I recall.

Still a pretty short fuse even on the detuned versions, though.

I read somewhere, that Cosworth is making another run of castings of the old F1 motor for the historic crowd. Not cheap, as I recall. That said, a local hotrod shop owner is building a highboy around a Cosworth V8......go figure! Though in defense of this guy, he has a background in roadracing, and he ran an Atlantic team for quite a few years, so at least there's a loose connection there.
